RRR Review: SS Rajamouli’s Tremendous Sense of Conveying Epic Tale

Everyone is talking about RRR for a good reason: SS Rajamouli. With BAAHUBALI and BAAHUBALI 2, he established the trend of PAN-India films. The second part – the facts are well-known — enjoys the fortunate distinction of being the highest-grossing *Hindi* film of all time.

Naturally, RRR – his third pan-India film in a row — has a lot riding on it. It’s also notable because it’s Jr NTR’s Hindi debut, as well as Ram Charan’s second Hindi film. Two of Telugu cinema’s most well-known actors.

After a long absence, Jr NTR and Ram Charan rejoin with Rajamouli. For the uninitiated, RRR marks Jr NTR’s fourth collaboration with Rajamouli, while Charan reteams with Rajamouli following the mega-hit MAGADHEERA.

This time, there’s a lot on the line. BAAHUBALI [2015] was released with no expectations at the time. After the historic success of BAAHUBALI 2 [2017], RRR is carrying the weight of expectations and also needs to produce the statistics. The crucial question is whether RRR lives up to the high expectations.

Rajamouli returns to the past with RRR, like he did with BAAHUBALI [both parts]. The difference is that this time it’s about two revolutionaries. RRR is also set in the pre-independence period (1920).

Despite its long run time, RRR is a terrific entertainment that does not leave you restless. The narrative is well written, the twists and turns are captivating, and the suspenseful episodes, as well as superbly handled action sequences, keep you enthralled until the end. The best part is that you have no idea what’s going on since you don’t know the plot [Rajamouli hasn’t released much either, pre-release], so everything that happens on screen takes you completely by surprise.

Without giving anything away, here’s the plot. It’s the year 1920. India is ruled by the British. A native girl, Malli, impresses the wife [Alison Doody] of a British officer Scott Buxton [Ray Stevenson]. To the surprise of her parents and the rest of the clan, she takes the girl away forcibly to Delhi.

Malli will be brought back by Komaram Bheem [Jr NTR], a tribe member. When the British discover of Bheem’s goal, they intend to track him down no matter what it takes. Bheem’s appearance, on the other hand, is unknown. Alluri Sitarama Raju [Ram Charan], a police officer, accepts the challenge.

Rajamouli’s films have a desi feel to them and are full of enjoyment. RRR is no exception. He understands what his audience wants from him, which is why each sequence is packed with fun. Wait, Rajamouli also understands that mass moments without emotions can backfire, which is why his films have a strong emotional undertone. It’s also on RRR.

When you look at the images, it’s clear that Rajamouli has a tremendous sense of conveying an epic tale. The sheer magnificence of Ram Charan’s and Jr NTR’s introductions will leave you speechless.

RRR has enough good material to keep the audience’s interest for the most of its runtime. The emotional aspect is perfectly balanced with subtle humor, drama, action scenes, and, of course, some breathtaking vistas that will leave you speechless.

Are there any hiccups? Yes, after intermission, the tempo slows down in the second act. Aside from that, a number of the moments in this hour aren’t particularly compelling. Sure, it’s a comedy, and there’s no need to hunt for logic, but a few scenes fall flat. Also, Alia Bhatt’s character should have been written better.

RRR is supported by Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s muscular shoulders. Jr NTR is a standout performer who puts on a show that doesn’t miss a beat. He provides RRR with much-needed strength. Ram Charan is incredible. In dramatic and action scenes, it’s electrifying. The attractiveness of the deed adds weight. Also, Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s dance talents in ‘Naacho Naacho’ leave you speechless. This song’s dance merits special mention.

Furthermore, the two performers have dubbed their lines in Hindi themselves, and the diction and word flow are flawless.

Alia Bhatt is given little screen time, whereas Ajay Devgan has a well-written cameo. As adversaries, Ray Stevenson (Scott) and Alison Doody (Lady Scott) are effective. Olivia Morris is only given a limited amount of screen time. Shriya Saran does well in a cameo role.

‘Naacho Naacho’ is a major hit on the soundtrack, and ‘Sholay’ [end credits] is a fitting way to close the movie. The cinematography of KK Senthil Kumar is breathtaking, and it perfectly captures the scope of the picture. The production design by Sabu Cyril is fantastic. The outfits of Rama Rajamouli are well-researched, and the attention to detail is impressive. V Srinivas Mohan’s VFX is up to par with industry norms. One of the film’s strong points is its action segments.

RRR is a teRRRific performer that deserves to be seen on the big screen. The film has the potential to be a huge success. It’s not to be missed!
