Tesla’s Fremont factory in California has been asked by Elon Musk to hold a vote on unionization by the United Auto Workers (UAW).
President Joe Biden addressed rival automakers Ford and General Motors in his State of the Union Address, but not Tesla. Both companies have a large union presence, which is a key component of Biden’s electoral base.
The snub from pro-union Biden may have been “because Tesla is non-union and moved to Texas, a ‘right to work’ state,” according to Gene Simmons, bassist and singer for Kiss.
Musk appears to concur, saying, “I’d want to hereby welcome UAW to hold a union vote at their leisure.” Tesla is powerless to stop them.” Musk claims that because the labor market in the Bay Area is so competitive, Tesla must “treat and compensate our (amazing) people well,” making unionization unattractive.
Although Musk has stated that he supports a fair vote on unionization, he and other Tesla executives have been accused of obstructing union initiatives in the past. A California judge found the company’s management guilty of a number of illegal anti-union activities in September 2019.
Amita Tracy, the administrative judge, identified 12 activities by the company that were in violation of US labor laws. This includes allowing security officers to harass workers passing out union flyers in the parking lot, prohibiting employees from wearing pro-union T-shirts and buttons, interrogating union organizers repeatedly, and ultimately terminating one of them.
“Elon Musk says he’s neutral about the union,” one worker told The Guardian in 2018. They haven’t been neutral in the least. Anything pro-union or union is quickly shut down.” Musk has also been told to erase tweets that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) deemed to be threats to unionized workers. The order is presently being appealed by Tesla.
The trial’s central question is whether Holmes deceived investors by making baseless claims about her miraculous Edison machine…which never materialized as promised.
