Google Signs 5-Year Deal to Pay for Contents from AFP
Following a fine from the French regulator for its approach to negotiating payments for news organizations, Google has agreed to pay news wire Agence France-Presse for the use of its content. This is the company’s first accord.
The agreement was reached after months of negotiations, according to a statement released by the Alphabet Inc. division and AFP on Wednesday. The amount was not revealed. According to the news agency, the agreement would cover content in all European Union countries for the next five years.
Google and Facebook have been hesitant to pay media for using content such as news article excerpts in their user feed for a long time. They were forced to establish payment deals with the region’s publishers by the EU’s so-called neighboring rights law, which was passed in 2019.
In January, Google and a group of French press publishers (excluding AFP) reached an initial deal. In July, the French competition regulator fined Google 500 million euros ($593 million) for failing to bargain with news outlets “in good faith.” The fine was overturned by Google.
In a statement, Sébastien Missoffe, managing director of Google France, said, “This agreement with Agence France-Presse underlines our determination to establish common ground with publishers and press organizations in France on the matter of neighboring rights.”
