Remember when Facebook decided to divide Messenger into its own app in 2014, and no one knew why? It looks that Facebook didn’t know what it was trying to accomplish.
According to Bloomberg, Facebook is now adding certain major Messenger functions to the Facebook main app, including voice and video calls.
Chats and calls were previously part of Facebook’s Messenger function, which was an important element of the main app. Users have to download a second program, Messenger, to access these services starting in 2014.
The feature is now being tested in the United States and other markets. According to Connor Hayes, Messenger’s director of product management, the goal is to eliminate the need to go back and forth between the Facebook and Messenger apps.
These aren’t the only features that Facebook is bringing back to its main app with Messenger. Facebook has begun testing a limited version of Messenger’s inbox in the Facebook main app, according to Bloomberg. In September 2020, the firm began integrating Messenger with Instagram’s direct messaging.
Facebook is beginning to consider Messenger as a service rather than a standalone program, according to Hayes. As a result, “over time,” you might see Messenger capabilities integrated into more and more Facebook products, according to Hayes.
There could be another motive for Facebook’s desire to tighten the integration of all of its products. In a case filed in December 2020, the Federal Trade Commission claimed that Facebook was a monopoly and that it should be broken up, with Instagram and WhatsApp re-established as separate entities. Although the complaint was dismissed in June 2021, the FTC may pursue the same action again in the future.
