Triangle of Sadness
Ruben Ostlund’s “Triangle of Sadness,” a clever and vicious satire that nailed the essence of issues that plague the current world – influencer culture, the stupid bourgeoisie, and capitalism – won the Palme d’Or for best film. For the second time, the Swedish director cemented his place in cinema’s hall of fame by earning one of the industry’s most prestigious awards. La Jauria
At the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, Colombian director Andres Ramirez Pulido’s film “La Jauria” won the Nespresso Grand Prize. The story follows Eli, a small-town kid who is imprisoned in a Colombian tropical forest for a crime he and his companion, El Mono, committed. When El Mono is moved to the same location as Eli, a hidden secret is revealed, and danger lurks.
The Worst Ones
The festival’s “Un Certain Regard” section focuses on emerging, ground-breaking art-house cinema talent. “The Worst Ones,” a film set in the working-class areas of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France, won the top prize at the “Un Certain Regard” competition on Friday. It examines the issues of street casting when a film crew visits a village, directed by Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret.
Joyland
“Joyland,” the first ever entry of a Pakistani film in the “Un Certain Regard” competition, earned the jury prize as well as the Cannes Queer Palm for best LGBT, queer, or feminist-themed film. The video is a courageous depiction of the preconceptions and prejudices that plague the youngest son of a patriarchal family as he transitions into a transgender dancer in a Muslim society where he is expected to carry on the family name.
