Can Booster Shots Beat Covid-19? Know What Experts Say
Omicron coronavirus variant has produced an unprecedented situation, resulting in an increase in Covid-19 infection and vaccination dosages. To combat the significantly mutated Omicron, many countries around the world are urging individuals to take a third – or booster – dose.
Israel is taking things a step further by administering a fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccination to its citizens. India has also developed a scheme to provide the prophylactic dose to an eligible group of people.
Is this, however, the way to go? Is there a need for a booster shot every few months? The continually evolving coronavirus has confused healthcare experts and researchers, who have advocated for more vaccine coverage. However, these experts have stated in numerous interviews that aiming to increase the population of the entire country every few months is unrealistic.
“There are better ways than giving boosters every six months,” Akiko Iwasaki, a Yale University professor of immunobiology and one of the most authoritative voices on Covid-19, told the New York Times.
“This doesn’t appear to be a long-term strategy, for sure,” said Deepta Bhattacharya, an immunologist at the University of Arizona.
Booster shots were suggested as a way to boost immunity against the coronavirus, given the virus’s constant changes. However, there is no evidence that this dose is effective.
The immune boost was very transitory, according to several research in the United States, with antibody levels dropping within weeks after the third injection.
“Even with so much antibodies, stopping the virus for an extended period of time is difficult.” “It’s a much higher threshold now than it was previously, and perhaps an Omicron-specific vaccination might do a better job,” Shane Crotty, a virologist in California, told the New York Times.
Due to the Omicron variant, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla indicated late last year that consumers might require a fourth Covid-19 dose sooner than intended. The announcement comes just days after Pfizer and BioNTech announced the findings of a research showing that a third dose of the vaccine is effective against Omicron, but that a two-dose regimen saw its capacity to defend against the extensively modified virus diminish dramatically.
However, in the worst-affected country, the United States, Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said it’s too soon to talk about a possible fourth dosage of Covid-19 vaccine.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Singapore’s Health Minister, Ong Ye Kung, echoed the same sentiment. “Your immune system would have been stimulated if you healed quickly from an infection with no consequences. Consider that a rather potent vaccine shot “he stated.
For those who have been sick and then vaccinated, or those who have been infected in between vaccination doses, Ong said there is no rush to be boosted.
