As nationwide protests continue to get worse, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on Monday. This is likely to lead to a new cabinet in the country, which is in a lot of trouble right now.
This comes a few days after President Gotbaya Rajapaksa asked the Prime Minister to step down in a special meeting on Friday as a way to end the political crisis in the country, according to the Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror.
Now that the Prime Minister has quit, President Rajapaksa is likely to ask all the political parties in Parliament to form a Cabinet together.
Earlier, the leader of the opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sajith Premadasa, said that he would not accept the position of prime minister in an interim government.
Monday morning, protesters gathered outside the prime minister’s official home, Temple Trees, to ask Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa not to step down.
After meeting with the prime minister, they got into a fight with people who were against the government near the Temple Trees. At least 16 injured people have been taken to the Colombo National Hospital.
The resignation happened soon after he sent out a tweet telling people to be calm.
“Even though feelings are running high in #lka, I want everyone to be calm and remember that violence only leads to more violence. The current economic crisis needs a solution, and this administration is committed to finding one “In a tweet, Mahinda said.
In response to Mahinda’s tweet, former Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara said, “The only violence was done by your “supporters,” who first came to your office and then attacked peaceful protesters.”
Sri Lanka has been in an economic crisis for weeks because of a lack of foreign currency. This has led to a lack of fuel, food, and medicine, among other things.
Protests have been going on for days, trying to get the government and lawmakers to act quickly.
