The booster would fall about 20 miles off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and the upper stage would land off the northwest coast of Kauai, Hawaii, after a partial orbit around the Earth.

Now, though, plans have changed, and SpaceX plans to use its Mechazilla launch tower and “chopsticks” to catch the Starship booster as it comes back from space during the first orbital flight test of the giant rocket. Which, after taking off from the base in Boca Chica, Texas, has a partial return to land in the Gulf of Mexico and return to the base to be caught by the launch tower.
