A North Korean man was sentenced to death for smuggling and selling copies of the Netflix series “Squid Game” after police discovered seven high school kids watching the show, according to reports.
The smuggler is believed to have imported a copy of “Squid Game” from China into North Korea and sold USB flash sticks with the series on them. According to reports, his sentence would be carried out by a firing squad.
According to accounts, a student who bought a drive was sentenced to life in prison, while six others who watched “Squid Game” were sentenced to five years of hard labor, and teachers and school administrators were fired and threatened with exile to remote mines or death.
North Korea has gone to great lengths to keep foreign content out of the country by enforcing rigorous controls.
The arrest of the seven kids for watching Squid Game is the first time the North Korean government has used the recently passed law on “Reactionary Thought and Culture Elimination” in a case involving minors.
The law, which was established last year, stipulates that watching, keeping, or sharing media from capitalist countries, primarily South Korea and the United States, has a potential penalty of execution.
