Since 1969, World Telecommunication Day has been observed on 17th May, commemorating the foundation of the ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. It was established as Resolution 46 by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973.

World Information Society Day
In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society requested that the UN General Assembly establish 17 May as World Information Society Day to highlight the importance of ICT and the wide spectrum of Information Society concerns presented by WSIS. In March 2006, the General Assembly passed a resolution (A/RES/60/252) establishing World Information Society Day as an annual event on May 17th.
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, in November 2006, voted to commemorate both events on May 17 as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The revised Resolution 68 asks Member States and Sector Members to commemorate the day each year by conducting appropriate national initiatives.
