International Mother’s Day 2023: Honoring the Women Who Raised Us

International Mother's Day 2023

Listen to the Podcast:

International Mother’s Day, also called Mothering Sunday, is a special day for celebrating and honoring mothers and mother figures for their love and contributions to their families and society. This day is generally celebrated in India, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on the second Sunday of May.

If it were up to us, Mother’s Day would be every day so we could thank our mothers for everything they do and who they are. They wipe away the tears. They always pick up the phone when we call. When we need it most, they always know what to say. And there’s no doubt that their hugs are the best.

No matter what you have planned for this year, we’ll tell you when you can expect to party and what else you need to know about this special Sunday in May.

History of Mother’s Day

Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe suggested that Mother’s Day be held yearly to help women become more peaceful and give up their weapons. It was still done in Boston for about ten years because she paid for it, but people stopped doing it afterward.

Anna Jarvis held a special Mother’s Day party in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1907 to honor her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. During the Civil War, Ann Jarvis worked for peace and set up “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to improve health and cleaning. Her daughter Anna Jarvis started a campaign to make Mother’s Day more well-known. John Wanamaker, a clothing store owner from Philadelphia, later gave money to her cause.

In 1908, Jarvis helped set up a service for 407 children and their moms at Andrew’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. The church is now an important place for Mother’s Day. It was named a National Historic Landmark as a tribute to all mothers.

In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day a public holiday to honor mothers. It is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

Significance of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a holiday that is marked all over the world every year. It’s a day to celebrate and honor women and motherhood. Mother’s Day is important because it lets us show how important mothers are in our lives and society.

Different nations and countries celebrate Mother’s Day differently, but the meaning is the same. It is a day to thank and honor mothers for all their hard work and efforts to raise their children. It is a day to show love and appreciation for the way mothers guide, support, and love their children no matter what.

Mother’s Day also shows how important it is for mothers to be healthy and happy. It’s a chance to talk about how hard it is for mothers to raise their kids and how they need more support and tools to help them.

Mother’s Day is a special day that shows how much mothers mean to our lives and to society as a whole. It’s a day to honor the love and care that moms give to everyone, no matter what, and to thank them for everything they do.

Mother’s Day is a special day marked worldwide to honor and thank mothers for everything they do for their children. It is a day to show love, thanks, and respect for someone who has greatly impacted our lives.

Mother’s Day is important because it’s a time to recognize and thank mothers for all their love, care, and efforts for their children. Mothers have the biggest impact on their children’s and society’s futures. They often have to balance their personal and work lives well while ensuring their families are healthy.

Mother’s Day is also a time to honor and celebrate mom’s strength and toughness. It allows us to show our mothers, who work hard to improve our lives, how much we love and appreciate them. It’s a time to think about how mothers have changed our lives and tell them how much we appreciate them.

The Mother’s Day Rule: Gardening Folklore

Mother’s Day gardening rule: You don’t have to think about frost on Mother’s Day or afterward.

Folklore says that there are a lot of rules that farmers must follow. Whether it’s planting on Good Friday or waiting until after the Three Ice Men have gone to put your plants in the ground, folklore and tradition have much to say about how to have a successful, fruitful garden. Many swears by these tips passed down from our ancestors.

People often say that you shouldn’t plant anything until Mother’s Day. This is called “The Mother’s Day Rule.” What does it mean, and is it true?

The basic idea is easy to understand: Mother’s Day is on the second Sunday of May, when many people think the danger of frost has passed and it’s safe to start planting a garden. It’s a good rule of thumb because, as we all know, just because it’s spring on the calendar doesn’t mean it will feel like spring in March and April, especially in the Northeast.

If you put your tender plants too early, when nighttime temperatures are still in the 20s and 30s, you’re asking for trouble. People in warmer, drier climates have their own rules about when to plant, and many rely on the plant and its hardness.

Why do We Celebrate Mother’s Day?

The party has been going on since the late 1800s and comprises several events. But it was a social activist and community leader Anna Maria Reeves Jarvis, who started things off by accident.

Jarvis started women’s clubs to help mothers take care of their children. In 1868, she created Mothers’ Friendship Day to unite the mothers of Confederate and Union soldiers and help them get along.

From there, suffragette Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870 to support world peace and push for a Mother’s Peace Day in June.

Around that time, the idea of a day to honor mothers started to take hold, but it took at least 35 years for it to become popular.

When Jarvis died in 1905, her daughter Anna started writing letters asking for a Mother’s Day to honor not only her mother’s work but all mothers and the sacrifices they make for their children.

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed an order making the second Sunday in May Mother’s Day because of how hard she worked to make it happen.

But now things have started to get interesting. All those cards, flowers, and sweets you buy today for Mom? Jarvis wouldn’t have any of it. She wanted moms to be honored, not turned into a product. And in the 1920s, she called the current version of the holiday a “free-for-all in materialism.”
