How Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft Made Billions During War on Terror?

A new report released on Thursday documented how Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter made billions in the war on terror. The report, entitled “Big Tech Sells War,” concluded that these major tech firms make billions off of selling wars to people.

According to a new report, millions of dollars went to corporate technology companies in contracts with the military and other government agencies in the name of fighting terrorism in the period immediately following the September 11 attacks. An investigation of the six largest tech companies in the US found a massive increase in government contracts, with Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter seeing huge rises in government contracts since 2004. The report claims that the contracts the tech companies signed were with agencies central to the war on terror.

“It’s become evident that Big Tech corporations, especially from the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security, have seen massive growth in federal demand for their services, and that has been particularly noticeable in the last 10 years,” it announced. US military and intelligence agencies have seen an increase in the need for cloud computing and GPS software in the years since 2001 because the defense industry has increased its digitization. The study discovered that over the past 14 years, the Department of Defense has spent $43.8 billion on contracts with Big Tech companies, according to the Action Center on Race and the Economy, who worked with social justice groups LittleSis and MPower Change.

The report claimed that four of the five leading Big Tech spenders were involved in foreign policy or were established to fight the Global War on Terror. “Amazon and Microsoft especially have soared in recent years,” according to the report, which adds that “Amazon signed roughly five times as many federal contracts and subcontracts in 2019 than it did in 2015” while “Microsoft signed nearly eight times as many” in the same time span.

The investigation discovered that Microsoft enjoyed a significant boost in defense contracts since the Trump administration was elected. That is, the number of deals the company signed between 2016 and 2018 has increased by over 600 percent.

It has been shown that traditional military and defense contractors, such as Northrop Grumman and Raytheon, have seen a recent decline in their contracts.

Thus far, the Big Tech companies have remained mum to AFP’s request for comment. The report referenced data collected by Tech Inquiry, an online tool that makes US government contracts more accessible.

According to the report, the numbers given in the report are “very likely an underrepresentation” because the tool includes only contracts with publicly available information.

Meanwhile, its authors criticize a “revolving door” effect in which ex-senior government officials take prominent roles in technology companies after leaving their government jobs.

According to the article, examples of former State Department officials who now work for Google, Amazon, and Microsoft include Jared Cohen, previously of the State Department; Steve Pandelides, formerly of the FBI; and Joseph D. Rozek, who was involved in founding the Department of Homeland Security.
