Rohit Sharma Named India’s T20I Captain

The BCCI unveiled a 16-member squad on Tuesday that would play three T20Is against New Zealand starting later this month. Rohit Sharma has been chosen India’s new T20I captain. Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja have all been rested for the T20Is, therefore the squad will be without them.

KL Rahul has been named as the team’s vice-captain, while IPL talents Venkatesh Iyer and Harshal Patel have received their first international call-ups. Iyer played in the IPL 2021 for Kolkata Knight Riders, amassing 370 runs at an average of 41.11 with four half-centuries and three wickets, helping the two-time champions reach the final.

Harshal was the leading wicket-taker for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, with 32 wickets, the joint-highest in a single IPL season, including a hat-trick against the five-time champions Mumbai Indians.

Avesh Khan, a teenage pacer who had a fantastic IPL season, is also included in the squad. Avesh, one of England’s reserve players for the Test series, was forced to return home after suffering an injury in a warm-up game, but he recovered brilliantly to finish the IPL with 24 wickets for Delhi Capitals. Yuzvendra Chahal is back in the fold after being dropped for the T20 World Cup, while the spin department is reinforced by R Ashwin and Axar Patel.

Shreyas Iyer, who was a stand-by player at the World Cup, has been recalled to the squad, which also includes Ruturaj Gaikwad, the IPL 2021’s best run-getter and Orange Cap winner. Gaikwad, who scored 635 runs in Chennai Super Kings’ title-winning season last month, was named to India’s squad for the Sri Lanka tour, but he failed to impress.

Regulars Kohli, Bumrah, Shami, Jadeja, and Pandya, who have been on the road for far too long, will not be included. Since India’s tour to England in August, followed by the IPL and the just finished T20 World Cup in the UAE, Kohli, Shami Bumrah, and Jadeja have been playing at a steady pace. The motivation for giving them a break appears to be that India will embark on a long trip to South Africa beginning in December, and the squad could benefit greatly from providing their top players with a much-needed break so that they can freshen up and be ready for the SA tour.

India A’s team and itinerary for three four-day matches in South Africa, which will take place in Bloemfontein on November 23, November 29, and December 6, were also confirmed by the board. It includes RCB young batter Devdutt Padikkal and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s current pace sensation Umran Malik, as well as Priyank Panchal as captain.

There was no notification about India’s Test selection for the two-match series against New Zealand, which begins on November 25 after the T20Is ended on November 21.

India’s T20I squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj.
