Discord Bot Targeted by Hackers: All You Need to Know

Axie Infinity, a popular play-to-earn (P2E) blockchain game, alerted players to a new hacking attempt involving its Discord bot MEE6. The MEE6 bot is a popular Discord bot used by many projects to automate various roles and messages. According to Axie Infinity’s tweets, the attackers gained control of the MEE6 bot, which was installed on the main server, and used it to grant permissions to a bogus Jiho account. The hackers then used the account to spread information about a bogus mint.

The team was successful in removing the fraudulent messages and the compromised MEE6 bot from the main server. They warned that many users would see the fake message until they restarted Discord.

Several projects with the MEE6 bot installed on their servers have experienced similar issues. RTFKT, PROOF/Moonbirds, PXN, Memeland, Cool Cats, and other admin accounts have been compromised.

1/ There was a compromise of the Mee6 bot which was installed on the main Axie server. The attackers used that bot to add permissions to a fake Jiho account, which then posted a fake announcement about a mint.

Later, the official MEE6 Twitter account clarified that there was no technical breach in their systems, but one of their employees’ accounts had been compromised. The MEE6 team stated that the problem has been resolved and that similar incidents will not occur in the future.

However, it is unclear what message the attackers published, as well as the scope of the attack.

A series of security breaches appear to have shaken the P2E game community’s faith in Axie Infinity. The Discord bot breach comes less than a month after one of the largest heists on Axie Infinity’s Ronin bridge, which resulted in a loss of over $625 million (roughly Rs. 4,856 crore) in crypto assets. Axie Infinity’s Ronin Bridge exploit, known as the biggest hack in crypto history, accounted for half of all crypto attacks in the first quarter of 2022.

Some servers have reported MEE6 being used to post unwanted messages. There is no technical breach in our systems. This was due to one of our employee's account getting compromised.
