Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: Parliament will Assemble on April 19

The Sri Lankan Parliament is due to assemble on April 19 amid one of the country’s biggest economic crisis and a state of national emergency.

This will be the second session of Parliament after President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared a state of national emergency on April 1, following the first session on April 5.

The meeting’s program was determined at Friday evening’s Committee on Parliamentary Business meeting presided over by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Daily Mail Sri Lanka reported.

Parliament is set to meet on April 19 at 10 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., according to an official announcement. The session is slated to begin on April 22 and conclude on April 29.

On April 3, 26 Sri Lankan Cabinet Ministers resigned in unison in the face of mounting public outrage over the government’s handling of the economic crisis. They all signed a general letter of resignation, opening the stage for the formation of a new Cabinet.

Although President Rajapaksa selected at least four ministers on April 4 to maintain the government’s legitimacy until a full Cabinet could be formed, he has invited opposition lawmakers to join a united government to address the economic crisis.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Gotabaya Rajapaksa continue to maintain their positions despite widespread calls for their resignation across the country.

In the midst of a serious economic crisis, National People’s Power (NPP) MP Vijitha Herath said on Friday that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa should be impeached if he does not resign on his own and a no-confidence resolution against the present administration be brought.

Sri Lanka is undergoing a severe economic crisis, with widespread food and fuel scarcity affecting a substantial portion of the island’s population. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy has been in free fall, precipitating the collapse of the tourism sector.

Sri Lanka is also experiencing a currency crisis, which has impacted its ability to import food and fuel. The country is currently experiencing lengthy power outages.

Protests are also taking place in the country over the government’s handling of the country’s worst economic crisis in decades. Yesterday, a protest against the Sri Lankan government was staged outside the US Embassy in Colombo.
