He’s a rich guy, but Elon Musk has only been the “owner” of Twitter for a day. Users are already seeing changes on the platform.
Among other things, a lot of people have seen big changes in their follower counts very quickly. The singer Katy Perry lost more than 200,000 followers after the news that Musk is taking over Twitter, and former President Barack Obama lost more than 300,000. On the other hand, it looks like right-wing politicians like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro are getting more followers.
This, of course, led to a lot of theories about why this is happening, from Twitter banning “bot accounts,” which are fake, automated accounts set up to boost someone’s follower count, to the mysterious “shadow ban” rules changing (the theory is that Twitter is secretly suppressing certain accounts to make them less popular). Twitter, on the other hand, says that none of these are true.
“While we are still taking action on accounts that violate our spam policy, which can affect follower counts, these fluctuations appear to be mostly due to an increase in new account creation and deactivation,” Twitter said to NBC News. This is what they said.
This could be seen as people on the left of the political spectrum leaving Twitter, while people on the right of the political spectrum are joining or re-joining the platform. This affects follower counts, especially for high-profile accounts (for the record, I haven’t seen a big change in my follower count).
Twitter didn’t give any exact numbers to help people understand what was going on, but the company told NBC that it was looking into the matter.
