Is the Tuna Diet Effective for Weight Loss?

Surely you’ve heard of the tuna diet, but do you know if it works? 

Dave Draper, the 1960s bodybuilding icon better known as “The Blonde Bomber,” Mr. America in 1965, and Mr. Universe in 1966, died last year due to congestive heart failure, per his wife, Laree Draper. In addition, he created the “Three-Day Tuna Diet,” also known as the “Tuna and Water Diet.”

What is the diet about?

According to bodybuilder Dave Draper’s own platform, IronOnline, it is a safe and healthy eating plan for weight loss while retaining maximum muscle mass, energy, and muscle strength. muscles. This diet did not initially attempt to meet daily protein requirements, but the only basic rule was to consume no less than 100 grams of protein regardless of gender or other parameters such as body composition and diet. In addition, light strength training was required.

The traditional application of the diet consists of consuming as much tuna as you can tolerate for three days, divided into four to six equal portions per day, and drinking as much natural water as you desire. Consider drinking up to four liters per day.

All of the above should be accompanied by daily vitamin and mineral supplements, and if possible, some other fatty acid, so that the body has fuel that converts to energy.

After three days have passed, low-fat dairy products, fruit, chicken, and vegetables can be gradually introduced, with the macronutrient distribution for this phase being 40 percent protein, 30 percent carbohydrates, and 30 percent fat.

How does it work?

Tuna should be completely natural (no mayonnaise, dressings, vinaigrettes, or other additives) and consumed at a rate of 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. If it is tuna in a can, the liquid should only be water and not oil. During the first three days, fiber, vitamins, and minerals from oral supplements should also be consumed.

There is no specific duration for the second phase, during which the previously mentioned foods are reintroduced, but the same guidelines should be followed until the target or ideal weight is reached.

Can you lose weight eating only tuna?

Yes, a diet like this will help you lose weight rapidly, but not because it is the healthiest diet you’ve tried, but because it is extremely restrictive and thus becomes a low-calorie or hypocaloric plan, which causes a caloric deficit. Moreover, it will cause you to lose weight by failing to meet your body’s daily energy requirements.

It is important to note, however, that just because it causes rapid weight loss, it is not an ideal plan for long-term weight control or maintenance, as is the case with virtually all fad diets. Additionally, they are not sustainable because they produce:

  • Hunger
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Muscle cramps
  • dizziness
  • Hair loss
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • dehydration
  • Menstrual cycle disturbances

The dangers

  • Extreme calorie restriction can cause a slowed metabolism, muscle mass loss, and extreme hunger.
  • Tuna is healthy, but there is a risk of mercury contamination, which can cause harm to the heart, kidneys, nervous system, and immune system.
  • Many essential nutrient deficiencies result from the elimination of food.
