Soon after Musk described his new $44 billion purchase as “the digital town square where topics crucial to the future of humanity are debated,” the owner of the Washington Post took aim at the only person in the world richer than him.
“That’s an intriguing question. “Did the Chinese government just gain some clout in the town square?” Jeff Bezos inquired late Monday.
He retweeted a tweet from a New York Times report stating that China was Tesla’s second-largest market, behind the United States. Tesla, Musk’s pioneering electric car firm, also opened its first overseas factory in Shanghai.
Twitter is restricted in China, giving it little control over the site — something that the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos shared theory theorized may alter under Musk.
Soon after receiving thousands of reshares for his tweet, Jeff Bezos said that he did not truly believe it.
“My own answer to this question is probably not,” he added in a subsequent tweet, which received fewer views.
“In this way, the complication in China for Tesla is more plausible than censorship at Twitter,” he said.
China’s foreign ministry also stated on Tuesday that there was no reason to believe Beijing could use its clout over Tesla to influence material on Twitter.
According to Forbes, Musk is currently the world’s richest person, with a fortune of $268 billion – about $100 billion more than second-place Bezos and his $171 billion.
Tesla did not react to calls for comment, and Twitter did not answer questions for comment.
Musk, on the other hand, made it clear on Monday that he does not fear individuals who have criticized his takeover of the site, which he has promised to return to free speech principles.
“I hope that even my harshest detractors continue to follow me on Twitter because that is what free expression entails,” he wrote on his new website.
On Monday night, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey termed Musk’s $44 billion buyouts and privatization of the social media company the “correct way.”
“Elon’s goal of building a platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive’ is correct,” Dorsey tweeted.
“Elon is the singular solution I trust,” he stated. I believe in his goal to spread the light of consciousness.”
