We’re only a few weeks away from returning to The Matrix, and The Matrix Resurrections has published a new poster in preparation for the upcoming sequel. Keanu Reeves as Neo is prominently featured on the poster, which also features Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus.
The Matrix Revolutions felt like a very satisfying finale to the story of Neo and the fate of the remaining humans who were hunkered down in the caverns of Zion, so fans of the franchise have been scratching their heads since the film was revealed. When we last left Neo, he had just arrived on Earth’s surface to confront the machines and seek their assistance in defeating a common foe, the renegade software Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving).
The film ends with Neo sacrificing himself to save humanity and destroy Smith, putting an end to the man-machine conflict. The finale even included a literal portrayal of a new dawn for the Matrix universe, with those who wished to stay in having the option to do so, and those who wished to leave having the option to do so.

Apart from Moss and Reeves, there will be returning characters from the previous films: Jada Pinkett Smith will reprise her role as Captain Niobe, and Lambert Wilson will reprise his role as The Merovingian, the rogue software that collected The Matrix’s equivalent of ghosts, vampires, and werewolves. Daniel Bernhardt, who plays Agent Johnson, will also be back. Weaving was invited to reprise his part but had to decline owing to scheduling issues, according to reports. Lana Wachowski, who directed the first three films with her sister Lilly Wachowski, is also back as a co-writer and director.
Other newcomers to the franchise include Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Erèndria Ibarra, Priyanka Chopra, and Christina Ricci, in addition to newcomer Abdul-Mateen II, who plays Morpheus.
On December 22, The Matrix Resurrections will be released in theaters and on HBO Max.
