World No Tobacco Day 2023 – History, Theme, and Importance

World No Tobacco Day 2023

Listen to the Podcast:

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed every May 31. Hence tomorrow is World No Tobacco Day 2023. The annual event tells people about the dangers of smoking, how tobacco companies do business, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight against smoking, and what people worldwide can do to protect their health and the health of future generations.

World Health Organization (WHO) member states established World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to bring global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable mortality and disease it causes. The day is also intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and its negative health effects, which cause more than 8 million deaths annually around the globe, including 1.2 million due to exposure to secondhand smoke.

The day has received both support and opposition from governments, public health organizations, smokers, cultivators, and the global tobacco industry.

World No Tobacco Day: History

In 1987, the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) designated April 7, 1988, as World No Tobacco Day, the 40th anniversary of WHO. The purpose of this day was to encourage smokers and tobacco chewers worldwide to cease for at least 24 hours.

On May 31, 1989, the second World No-Tobacco Day motif was “Women and Tobacco – The Female Smoker: At Added Risk.” In 2008, the WHO outlawed all tobacco-related advertising and promotions out of concern that they would encourage youth to begin smoking.

Aim

Raise awareness about alternative crop production and marketing opportunities for tobacco farmers and encourage them to grow sustainable, nutritious crops.

World No Tobacco Day 2023 Theme

This year’s World No Tobacco Day theme is “We need food, not tobacco,” it aims to encourage tobacco growers to adopt sustainable and nutritious crops by raising awareness about marketing and production alternatives. Furthermore, the topic focuses on revealing the tobacco industry’s sabotage activities to replace tobacco with sustainable crops, resulting in a global food crisis.

Today, government officials and policymakers develop and implement appropriate policies, tactics, and market conditions for tobacco producers by transitioning them to growing food crops to alleviate the food crisis. Furthermore, green activists and public social welfare organizations work together to promote initiatives to stop the cultivation of tobacco plantations.

Grow Food, not Tobacco

Tobacco is bad for our health, the health of the farmers who grow it, and the world’s health. The tobacco business gets in the way of efforts to develop something else instead of tobacco, which adds to the global food crisis.

This movement wants governments to stop giving subsidies to tobacco farmers and use the money saved to help farmers switch to better crops for the environment and improve food security and nutrition.

How to Celebrate World No Tobacco Day 2023?

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated annually on May 31st around the world to raise awareness of the devastating health effects of tobacco use and to encourage people to quit smoking. In 2023, we can celebrate this day in several different ways:

  1. Quit smoking: The best way to celebrate World No Tobacco Day in 2023 is to quit smoking. If you currently smoke, now is the ideal time to cease. You will improve both your own health and the health of those around you.
  2. Promote tobacco-free living: Spread the word to your friends, family, and community by advocating for a tobacco-free lifestyle. Encourage others to quit smoking, be a role model, and support tobacco control policies in your area.
  3. Organize events: Organize events in your community such as community walks, runs, or cycling events to raise awareness of the negative health effects of tobacco use. Invite local health professionals to give talks on the topic and distribute educational materials about the dangers of smoking.
  4. Social media campaign: Take advantage of social media platforms to spread the message about World No Tobacco Day and encourage others to quit smoking. Share personal stories, motivational messages, and information about the health benefits of quitting smoking.

Remember, quitting smoking is not only good for your health but also for those around you. Celebrate World No Tobacco Day 2023 by taking the first step towards a tobacco-free lifestyle.

Importance of World No Tobacco Day (WNTD)

Around 35 lakh hectares of land are used for tobacco farming worldwide every year. Tobacco growing is projected to cause 2 lakh hectares of deforestation each year. Tobacco production has a substantially bigger negative impact on ecosystems than other agricultural activities, such as maize growing and livestock grazing, because tobacco farmlands are more prone to desertification (loss of biological productivity).

Furthermore, growing tobacco necessitates the intensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which may deplete soil fertility, limiting the production of other food crops.
If tobacco were cultivated as a commercial crop, it could threaten the viability of food production in low- and middle-income nations. Most (90%) of the largest tobacco-growing regions are low- and middle-income countries, including four low-income countries with food deficits.

In light of the above situations, the government needs to move immediately to stop farmers from growing tobacco and help them switch to other food crops. World No Tobacco Day does all these things by running campaigns with different yearly themes.
