Ukraine Appeals to NATO for Weapons
Ukraine requested more weaponry from NATO on Thursday in its war against Russia to help prevent more crimes like those alleged in Bucha and urged Germany to cut red tape to allow more supplies in.
NATO as a whole refuses to send soldiers to Ukraine or to enforce any no-fly zone in order to prevent Russia from entirely crushing its neighbor. Anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons, as well as equipment and medical supplies, are provided by individual member countries.
This simply isn’t good enough for Ukraine.
“I’ve got a straightforward agenda for you. On it, there are only three objects. As NATO foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to explore ways to shore up support for Kyiv, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters, “It’s weapons, guns, weapons.”
“We’ve fought before, so we know what we’re doing.” We have a proven track record of success. “However, without the long-term and significant supplies that Ukraine has demanded, these victories would come at a high cost,” Kuleba added. “The more guns we obtain and the sooner they reach Ukraine, the more lives will be saved.”
As Ukrainian cities fell under Russia’s air and ground attack earlier this year, Germany was heavily chastised for refusing to give solely non-lethal supplies. However, once Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized soldiers to invade, Berlin altered its course, deploying armaments and increasing the defense budget.
But Kuleba said that Germany can do more, and go faster. “While Berlin has time, Kyiv doesn’t,” he said.
“We know how to fight. We know how to win. But without sustainable and sufficient supplies requested by Ukraine, these wins will be accompanied by enormous sacrifices,” Kuleba said. “The more weapons we get and the sooner they arrive in Ukraine, the more human lives will be saved.”
Some of the countries delivering weaponry are distinguishing between the types of assistance they can provide. They say that Ukraine should only receive defensive weapons, rather than warplanes or tanks, which would allow the country to fight back rather than hold out.
NATO’s greatest concern is that the 30 states would be drawn into a larger conflict with Russia, which possesses nuclear weapons.
However, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg dismissed the rhetorical debates over how much assistance to give the war-torn country. “Because Ukraine is conducting a defensive war, the distinction between offensive and defensive weapons is meaningless,” he explained.
“I have pushed allies to offer more support of many different types of equipment, including light weapons and heavy weapons,” Stoltenberg added.
Despite charges of Russian war crimes and predictions that more horrors are on the way, it appears unlikely that the world’s largest security alliance will agree to arm Ukraine and assist end Europe’s largest land conflict since 1945, at least for the time being.
