PSG Suspends Lionel Messi for Saudi Arabia Trip
Listen to the Podcast:
French media reported on May 2 that Paris Saint-Germain suspended Lionel Messi for two weeks after the World Cup champion made an unauthorized excursion to Saudi Arabia.
Messi will miss PSG’s next two games due to his suspension, which comes at a delicate time as the French club seeks to extend the Argentine star’s contract beyond this season.
Both L’Equipe and RMC Sport reported the suspension without citing their sources.
The organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
Messi’s trip came after PSG’s unexpected 3-1 defeat to Lorient on Sunday, giving the defending champions a five-point advantage over Marseille with five games remaining in the season. Messi completed the entire game.
According to L’Equipe, PSG coach Christophe Galtier promised to give his players Monday and Tuesday off if they defeated Lorient. Instead, the team had training on Monday and a day off on Tuesday.
Messi has an endorsement deal with Saudi Arabia.
Two years ago, the forward moved to PSG from Barcelona, and it has been speculated where he will play next.
