Imran Khan Nominates Former CJP Gulzar Ahmed as Caretaker PM

Imran Khan on Monday to serve as caretaker prime minister in the country’s continuing political turmoil, Gulzar Ahmed, Pakistan’s former chief justice, was selected as the incumbent.

Fawad Chaudhry, a former minister of information and a top Tehreek-e-Insaf official, said that the decision was made by the prime minister with the permission of the party’s core committee.

First, President Arif Alvi handed letters of recommendation for a caretaker prime minister to Prime Minister Khan and Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif Monday.

Ex-chief justice Gulzar Ahmed has been nominated as Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister in response to a letter from President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced in a statement.
Within three days of the dissolution of Parliament, President Alvi informed them that they must submit two nominees each to a committee that will be formed by the Speaker, comprised of eight members of the departing assembly or Senate or both, with equal representation from each party.

The president has the authority to appoint a caretaker prime minister in conjunction with the prime minister and the leader of the opposition in the departing National Assembly, according to a statement from the President’s Secretariat.

A caretaker government is established in Pakistan under Article 224-A(1) of the constitution to organize elections in the country.

Khan will serve as prime minister until a caretaker prime minister is appointed.

Shehbaz Sharif has so far refused to participate in the process, deeming it illegitimate.

Justice Ahmed, who was born in 1957, served as chief justice from December 2019 to February 2022.

One of the five judges found Nawaz Sharif unable to serve as prime minister in Pakistan because of his role in the Panama Papers scandal. He frequently made news because of his outspoken criticism of governments and bureaucrats.

Earlier this year, Justice Ahmed ordered the reconstruction of a temple in northwest Pakistan that had been desecrated by a mob, and he also asked officials to seek restitution from the attackers, saying their actions had brought Pakistan “international disgrace.”

He’d also been to a big Diwali celebration at the reconstructed temple last year to show his support for the Hindu community.
