Google has apologized for a problem with a software update that caused a big problem around the world on Tuesday.
A company representative said that the team “worked quickly” to fix the problem and that services were back to normal.
“We’re aware of a problem with a software update that happened late this afternoon Pacific Time and temporarily made Google Search and Maps unavailable,” they said.
“We’re sorry about the trouble. We worked quickly to fix the problem, and now our services are back up and running.”
Technology platforms quickly let people know about the problem.
The most popular search engine in the world, Google Explorer, started having problems at 2:12 a.m. BST (9:12 p.m. EST, 11:12 a.m. AEST), according to the real-time online platform Downdetector.

As of 11:38 a.m., 4,113 people had confirmed that Google was down.
Users said that Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Images, which are also owned by Google, were also having problems. Both work because of Google’s search engine.

Network intelligence company ThousandEyes Inc. said that Google outages were affecting at least 1,338 servers in more than 40 countries, including the United States, Australia, South Africa, Kenya, Israel, and parts of South America, Europe, and Asia, such as China and Japan.
Before a second glitch happened around noon, the first outage on ThousandEyes lasted about 34 minutes. It only affected a few servers, and it took about seven minutes to fix.
When people tried to use the search engine, they got a 502 or 500 error message.
One error page said, “The server ran into a temporary error and could not finish your request.”
“Please give it another shot in 30 seconds.”
Users went to Twitter to talk about how confused they were and started using other search engines like Bing and DuckDuckGo to browse the web.

Google doesn’t say exactly how much traffic it gets, but it is the most popular website on the internet, with more than 80 billion visits per month.
