Former Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds died in a car accident on Sunday, according to local newspapers and fellow players, adding to the sport’s recent tragedies of Shane Warne and Rod Marsh.
The 46-year-old was involved in a single-car collision outside Townsville, Queensland, on Saturday night, after playing 26 Tests and 198 one-day internationals.
According to police, emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate the driver and lone occupant, but he died as a result of his injuries after the automobile left the road and rolled.
Symonds was not named by the authorities, but he was readily identified by media outlets and former players. Former Australian teammate Jason Gillespie tweeted, “Horrible news to wake up to.” “I’m completely devastated. We’ll all miss you, buddy.”

Symonds’ death comes just months after other Australian legends Shane Warne and Rod Marsh, who also died of heart attacks. The larger-than-life characters Symonds was well-liked not only for his hard-hitting style of play, but also for his easygoing demeanor.
He was widely regarded as one of Australia’s most talented all-rounders, and a crucial player of the team that won back-to-back 50-over World Cups in 2003 and 2007. However, he is best known for the infamous “monkeygate” affair in 2008, which pushed him into a downward spiral.
In the 2008 New Year Test in Sydney, Symonds claimed India spinner Harbhajan Singh called him a “monkey.” Singh was suspended for three matches despite denying any culpability, but the suspension was reversed when India threatened to pull out of the tour at a low period in India-Australia cricket relations.
It took a toll on the Australian player, who subsequently admitted he began drinking frequently. After being sent home from the World Twenty20 in England following the latest in a string of alcohol-related infractions, his Cricket Australia contract was withdrawn in June 2009.
Despite their hostility, Symonds and Harbhajan reconciled and joined the Indian Premier League together.
