President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy’s office announced on Sunday that Ukrainian and Russian officials will meet for discussions at a location near the Belarusian border with Ukraine.
The talks, which would be the first since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine last week, will take place without preconditions and are the result of a phone conversation between Zelenskiyy and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, according to Zelenskiyy.
“We agreed that the Ukrainian delegation would meet without preconditions with the Russian delegation near the Pripyat River on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border,” he said in a statement, reports Al Arabiya.
Putin orders nuclear forces on high alert
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the country’s nuclear “deterrence forces” to be placed on high alert on Sunday, accusing the West of pursuing “unfriendly” actions against his country.
International tensions are already high as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Putin’s directive would exacerbate the situation.
Moscow possesses the world’s second-largest nuclear arsenal, as well as a sizable stockpile of ballistic missiles that serve as the backbone of the country’s deterrence forces.
“I command the defense minister and the chief of the Russian armed forces’ general staff to place the Russian army’s deterrence forces in a special mode of combat service,” Putin stated.
In a televised address, he said, “You see, Western countries are not only antagonistic to our country in the economic sphere — I mean unlawful sanctions.”
“Aggressive words against our country are also tolerated by senior officials of important NATO countries.”
