Understanding Codependency: What It Looks Like and How to Heal?

These days, the term “codependent” is frequently used, but few people really understand what it really means.

Because codependency exists in all relationships to varying degrees, codependency is complex. The majority of us may look at the list of symptoms and say, “Oh my god, that sounds like me,” much like with mental illness.

The severity of the symptoms and their impact on our quality of life, however, is the true problem. Codependency is comparable.

Everyone has some codependency, but how can you tell when it gets too much?

The Definition

Codependency is characterized by a deep level of emotional reliance between two individuals, to the point where they are unable to function autonomously.

The Obvious Kind

Codependency often manifests in relationships where substance abuse is present. If one person in the relationship struggles with addiction, they may develop a strong reliance on the other person for financial support and housing.

The More Subtle Kind

That is a severe illustration. Even in the healthiest and most normal-appearing relationships, there is emotional codependency. It’s not limited to romantic partnerships either. Codependent relationships with friends and family are also conceivable.

Hard to Find

Codependent relationships can have a profoundly negative impact. It’s quite common for us to be unaware of being in such situations, which makes it difficult to find a way out. It is important for partners to rely on and uplift each other, while also maintaining a healthy level of independence.

Losing Your Sense of Self

Codependency arises when the equilibrium is disrupted. Our emotions, our well-being, and even our sense of self become deeply intertwined with the other individual.

Giver and Taker

In codependent relationships, whether they are romantic or not, there is typically one individual who assumes a more nurturing and supportive role, while the other person tends to take on a more assertive and influential position.

A Care Imbalance

The passive individual heavily depends on others for decision-making and seeking reassurance. The person in control derives some form of reward from exerting dominance over others.

Relationship Addiction

Codependency is often described as a form of “relationship addiction.” It can be compared to addiction as individuals develop a dependence on something that is detrimental to their well-being, making it incredibly challenging to overcome.

Enabling

Enabling is a significant indicator of a codependent relationship. Enabling can be described as a behavior that seeks to alleviate tension in a relationship caused by the problematic habits of the other person.

Constant Dig Outs

This could involve drastic measures like continuously releasing someone from jail on bail or giving them money each time they incur debt. This is typical in partnerships where there is substance misuse or addiction to gambling.

Finding Excuses

Moreover, enabling might take on more subdued forms. It’s possible that one partner is constantly making excuses for the other’s inadequacies. They always extend forgiveness and even make an effort to assist others in resolving their issues.

The Red Flags

These are a few more telltale symptoms of a codependent partnership.

1. Rescue and Responsibility

Individuals who grapple with codependency frequently exhibit a recurring tendency to intervene on behalf of others, and may even assume accountability for their errors. While their intentions are undoubtedly well-meaning, they tend to go to extremes in their efforts to assist others, inadvertently hindering them from taking care of themselves.

It’s quite clear how this can develop into an unhealthy pattern. One partner may frequently attempt to support the other person instead of allowing them to be independent. The other person may become accustomed to this and cease their efforts to be self-sufficient, such as making progress in life and resolving their own issues.

2. Self Sacrifice

Individuals in a codependent relationship often derive a strong sense of purpose from selflessly giving to others. They consistently exceed expectations, sometimes at their own expense, which greatly enhances their self-assurance.

This situation poses a challenge as it requires us to make unexpected sacrifices, which may not be desirable. Even if the individual benefiting from this excessive effort is content with it, the situation remains unsustainable. Eventually, those who constantly give will find themselves depleted of resources, whether it be emotionally or financially.

3. Pattern of Caretaking

Individuals who exhibit codependent tendencies often find themselves repeatedly entering into relationships that require them to assume an overwhelming amount of caretaking duties. They often encounter challenging situations that would cause many individuals to flee.

This may involve selecting partners who have significant challenges or consistently seeking friendships with individuals who are facing serious difficulties and finding it hard to manage.

4. Attracting Dysfunctional People

They may appear to appeal to individuals who have lower levels of functioning or are frequently in a state of crisis. Engaging in relationships of this nature can be a means of evading personal adult obligations, as one consistently finds themselves tending to individuals facing more challenging circumstances.

5. Being Overly Responsible

Some individuals who have a tendency to be overly supportive may go to great lengths to solve the problems of others, even to the point of taking on the responsibility themselves. Regrettably, individuals frequently attempt to address challenges that surpass their capacity to resolve, such as addiction or mental illness in others.

6. Helping Via Care

Because of the excessive responsibility the codependent person assumes for their partner’s issues, they may inadvertently hinder their partner from taking the essential actions to genuinely assist themselves.

A codependent giver may have good intentions, but they also fulfill their own need to feel needed. Feeling secure in the relationship is bolstered by the other person’s reliance on them.

7. Always Needing Reassurance

It is evident that the desire for reassurance and a sense of security is quite significant. Individuals with this fear may experience intense anxiety about being abandoned and seek constant reassurance to feel secure in their relationships.

8. Relationship Testing

Certain codependents will put their friends or relationships to the test in order to get this assurance. In a romantic connection, this could appear as threatening to leave in order to make their partner beg them to stay, or it could look like they’re trying to make their spouse jealous by showing them that they’re wanted.

9. Intensity

Relationships between codependents can frequently be very intense. A toxic emotional tie can arise when one partner becomes so engrossed in the other’s troubles that they absorb their feelings and hardships.

The repeated pattern of crisis and support creates a sense of enduring hardship and triumph. The intense but unhealthy connection can make it challenging to break the pattern, despite the positive feelings that arise from it.

Codependency Generally Starts in Childhood

Reflecting on your childhood can provide valuable insights into the likelihood of forming a codependent relationship. Our ability to form connections with others is typically developed by observing and learning during our early years.

We Learn What We See

If you have experienced a codependent relationship with your parents, or have witnessed this dynamic between them, it is possible that you may be inclined to replicate their mistakes.

We have Hope

It’s crucial to keep in mind that codependency is not a permanent condition and does not indicate that the relationship is destined to fail. If individuals are open to recognizing their situation and making an effort, they may be able to navigate towards a more positive and balanced relationship.
