They may be referring to Sauron, who features in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings films, because the synopsis indicates they will take us back to the time when the rings of power were forged.

Will we see some of the characters from the movies?

The series is not set in the same period as the films, but three iconic characters are rumored to appear in the plot, according to rumors.
