Rabindranath Tagore was born as Rabindranath Thakur on 7 May 1861 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India (present-day Kolkata, West Bengal, India) to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. Tagore’s mother Sarada Devi passed away when he was young, and his father Debendranath Tagore traveled extensively. Tagore was therefore reared by servants. Dwijendranath, the eldest sibling of Rabindranath Tagore, was a philosopher and poet. The other sibling of Tagore to be appointed to the Indian Civil Service was Satyendranath. Jyotirindranath, his sibling, was a musician, composer, and playwright, while Swarnakumari, his sister, was a novelist.

Hemendranath, Rabindranath’s sibling, instructed him in anatomy, geography, history, literature, mathematics, Sanskrit, and English. Tagore toured India with his father when he was 11 years old, following the completion of his Janeu. Rabindranath Tagore visited his father’s estate in Santiniketan and spent a month in Amritsar before traveling to the Himalayan hill station of Dalhousie, where he read biographies, studied history, astronomy, modern science, and Sanskrit, and examined the classical poetry of ‘Kalidasa’. Tagore was profoundly affected by the Gurbani and Nanak Bani chanted at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Tagore made his debut in 1882 with the Bengali short story Bhikarini.

Rabindra Nath Tagore attended a public school in England in 1878 because his father intended for him to become a lawyer. Tagore studied law at University College, London, but left to pursue independent study. His reading of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, Antony and Cleopatra, and Thomas Browne’s Religio Medici greatly influenced him.

Tagore returned to Bengal in 1880 without a degree and began publishing poems, short stories, and novels. Although he did not obtain national recognition, he became well-known in Bengal.
