Major Eyesight Problems and their Solutions
Our eyes are one of the most important and sensitive parts of the body. To make sure that they perform their function accurately throughout our lives, we need to care for them properly. Identifying these major eyesight problems and their solutions will be useful for you in the long run.
Signs of Unhealthy Eyes
Sometimes minor signs and symptoms occur in our eye that might be indicating a bigger problem. You should be able to recognize within the time that your eyes are unhealthy, and treatment should be started right away. Some of the signs your eyes require attention include:
- sudden and severe pain in the pain
- blurred or dimmed vision
- reoccurring pain inside or outside the eye
- redness in the eyes
- swelling around eyes
- change in color of the eye
- sensitivity to bright light
- seeing floating lines
- excessive tearing
- dryness inside the eyes
Types of Vision Problems
If any of the eyesight problems listed below apply to you, please consult an eye specialist as soon as possible.
Myopia
Myopia, also known as ‘nearsightedness’, is when you are able to see close objects clearly, but the vision becomes blurry with an increase in the distance. This might happen during any age and can be due to genetic reasons, developing either quickly or gradually over the years. Signs include a blurry vision of distant objects, squinting while reading, headaches, and problems while driving a vehicle.
Hyperopia
Hyperopia is also commonly known as ‘farsightedness’. Farsighted people may see objects that are far away clearly but have difficulty focusing on things that are close to them. You may experience blurry vision, headaches, or excessive squinting.
Treatment for both problems:
For diagnosis, a regular eye exam can be conducted, and after that, the doctor would probably be prescribed glasses or contact lens to aid in your blurry vision. In some cases, refractive surgery can also be done to get rid of this problem.
Presbyopia
When you reach your forties, it becomes more difficult to see objects up close, but you can still see things clearly from a distance. This is referred to as presbyopia. It isn’t a huge problem and is a common side effect of ageing. It’s also simple to fix.
Presbyopia is sometimes confused with farsightedness. However, the two conditions are very different. Presbyopia occurs when the eye’s natural lens becomes less flexible. A misshaped eyeball causes light rays to focus incorrectly once they enter the eye, resulting in farsightedness.
Treatment:
After being diagnosed with presbyopia, your eye specialist might prescribe any of the following: reading glasses, bifocals, trifocals, office progressives, or progressive multifocal according to your need.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a disorder that causes the cornea, or front surface of the eye is not bent properly, resulting in impaired vision.
Due to the irregular corneal curve, light entering the eye is not properly focused on the retina, resulting in a hazy image.
An unevenly shaped lens positioned behind the cornea can also produce astigmatism. It has the ability to impact both children and adults. It’s usually congenital, meaning it’s present at birth, although it can sometimes develop after an eye operation or an accident.
Treatment:
If the astigmatism is minor, the ophthalmologist may not recommend any therapy. Otherwise, corrective lenses are the standard treatment, and laser surgery may be beneficial in some cases.
Amblyopia or Lazy Eye
Amblyopia, often known as lazy eye, is an early childhood condition in which a child’s vision in the other eye does not develop as it would normally have. When a patient develops amblyopia, the brain prioritizes one eye over the other, effectively ignoring the “lazy” eye. The nerve cells responsible for vision are not able to mature properly if that eye is not stimulated appropriately. Some symptoms of amblyopia are blurred or double vision, turning of one eye (in any direction), and the inability of the eyes to work together.
Treatment:
Some of the treatment options for amblyopia include putting a patch over the working eye so the lazy eye is forced to work, atropine eye drops for children who do not wear patches, certain vision exercises for older kids, and in some cases, eye surgery. The type of treatment is always decided by a professional after the proper check-up.
Glaucoma
There are several forms of glaucoma, but they all result in vision loss due to damage to the optic nerve. It frequently goes unnoticed until eyesight is lost. Glaucoma is caused by a gradual increase in fluid pressure inside the eyes, which is the most frequent kind. Glaucoma vision loss cannot be reversed. However, if detected early enough, vision loss can be reduced or even prevented. A full eye exam is necessary to detect glaucoma early.
Treatment:
When detected at an early stage with minimal damage to the eye, glaucoma can be treated with medications (eye drops), laser treatment or surgery as per the doctors prescription.
Preventative Measure to Eyesight Problems
Taking the preventative measures given below can help you in avoiding these major eyesight problems. These are more important if you have a family history of eye problems.
- Visit your eye doctor at least annually
- Give your eyes a break of 20 seconds after every 20 minutes
- Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet
- Taking the recommended amount of Vitamin A (900 mcg for adult males and 700 mcg for adult females daily)
When to Consult an Eye Specialist
If diagnosed early by an eye care specialist, several common eye diseases can be corrected or at least slowed. Therefore, if you are experiencing any of the signs or symptoms given above, please schedule an appointment with your doctor immediately.
