As part of its efforts to boost tourism and sustain economic recovery, Indonesia will reopen Bali to all foreign visitors on February 4, needing a shorter quarantine period this time.
This follows the lifting of a ban on all foreign arrivals and the reduction of the quarantine time for fully vaccinated foreigners to five days from seven days on February 4, according to Luhut Panjaitan, a cabinet minister who also supervises the government’s pandemic response. Those who have only received one dose of Covid-19 vaccination must adhere to a seven-day quarantine.
Singapore Airlines Ltd. has announced that daily flights to Bali will resume on February 16, according to a separate e-mail sent to passengers on Monday. Last Monday, quarantine-free travel between Singapore and the neighbouring Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan was reinstated.
Bali, known for its temples and beaches, began a limited reopening in October, but visitors have been deterred by restrictions such as a 10-day quarantine, a visa with a local sponsor, and international health insurance.
The island of Bali reopens, but only two foreign tourists visit in the first month. Only a few countries were allowed to fly directly into Bali, while the rest of the world had to fly into Indonesia through Jakarta or Manado.
Visitors can arrive on the island by direct or connecting international flights starting February 4, according to Wiku Adisasmito, a spokeswoman for the country’s Covid-19 Task Force. A second law would examine the status of Bali’s other criteria, such as a visa with a local sponsor and health insurance, he said.
As the number of Covid-19 cases rises, Indonesia’s quarantine rules are being relaxed. In the seven days leading up to Monday, 9,150 new illnesses were registered, up from 190 at the start of the year. Nonetheless, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin predicts that the current wave will peak in February and that hospitalizations will remain manageable, as the majority of new cases appear to be minor.
