Mark your calendars, Apple fans – the tech giant is holding its first official event of 2023 on Sunday, May 7th. Dubbed “Let Loose,” this special livestream is expected to unveil exciting updates to the iPad lineup and related accessories. While Apple is keeping details under wraps, there are plenty of leaks and rumors hinting at what’s in store.
New iPad Pro Models on the Horizon
The star of the show will likely be a refresh of the iPad Pro. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts these new models will boast OLED displays, a significant upgrade over the current LCD and mini-LED screens. OLED technology should make for thinner devices with improved image quality.
Rumors also suggest the new iPad Pros could be the first to feature Apple’s next-generation M4 chip. This would give them a serious performance boost and potentially enable new AI capabilities, though major AI announcements are expected to be saved for WWDC in June.
iPad Air Getting Supersized
The mid-range iPad Air is also due for an update. Kuo indicates that in addition to the standard 10.9-inch size, Apple will introduce a larger 12.9-inch version—the same screen size as the current top-end iPad Pro. Under the hood, the new Air will likely run on the capable M2 chip introduced in last year’s MacBook Air.
Apple Pencil Leveling Up
As the event graphic prominently features a pencil, it’s a safe bet that an updated Apple Pencil is on the way. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports this will be a new version of the second-generation Pencil, last updated in 2018.
The marquee feature is expected to be haptic feedback, allowing users to “feel” their interactions with the iPad through subtle vibrations. Pressure-sensitivity could also enable new ways of controlling the tablet, such as squeezing the Pencil to perform certain actions.
Magic Keyboard Gets More Magical
iPad keyboards are getting attention too, with a redesigned Magic Keyboard anticipated to launch alongside the new tablets. The updated accessory will still include a trackpad and case, but with a more durable aluminum construction for a laptop-like feel.
A Streamlined Apple Event
“Let Loose” looks to be one of Apple’s more focused events, zeroing in on a single product category. Those hoping for a new iPad mini, entry-level iPad, or Mac will likely need to wait until later in the year.
Still, Apple appears to have some exciting things in store for iPad fans. Be sure to tune in on May 7th to see what Cupertino’s “different kind of Apple event” is all about.
