Amal Clooney Stuns at Cannes in Dress Code-Defying Black Gown

Amal Clooney made a striking solo appearance at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 16, turning heads on the red carpet while simultaneously breaking the event’s newly imposed dress code. Her elegant look at the premiere of Bono: Stories of Surrender drew praise — and questions about how strictly the festival enforces its latest style rules.

Clooney’s Elegant Look Makes a Statement

Amal Clooney, 47, human rights lawyer and wife of actor George Clooney, stunned in a vintage black silk gown designed by John Galliano. The form-fitting dress featured off-the-shoulder straps and a long, flowing train — a bold choice given the Cannes Film Festival’s new restrictions on voluminous outfits.

Her beauty look was equally polished. Clooney wore her chestnut-brown hair in a sleek, glossy blowout and accessorized with dangling diamond earrings that complemented the gown’s timeless elegance. She completed the ensemble with a minimal black clutch and subtle makeup that emphasized her natural features.

Celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos shared on Instagram that he styled her hair using T3 tools and finished the look with Delina hair perfume by Parfums de Marly, a luxury scent brand. The refined appearance reinforced Clooney’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s most stylish and composed public figures — even as she subtly sidestepped a new rule.

Cannes 2025 Introduces a New Dress Code

This year, the Cannes Film Festival rolled out a more conservative and restrictive dress code, sparking widespread attention and debate. According to the official FAQ on the festival’s website, the new guidelines ban nudity and overly elaborate clothing, especially garments with long trains, which could “hinder the proper flow of traffic” and complicate theater seating.

The updated rules were meant to prioritize safety, efficiency, and decorum, with organizers stating the changes were made for “decency reasons.” Specifically, the dress code applies to guests attending evening screenings between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. at the Grand Théâtre Lumière — the main venue where the most high-profile red carpet events occur.

According to the guidelines:

  • Permitted Attire: Long evening gowns, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, dark-colored pantsuits, and black/navy suits with bow ties or ties.

  • Prohibited Items: Nudity, excessively large outfits (especially gowns with trains), and sneakers or casual shoes.

The FAQ notes that Cannes welcoming teams are authorized to deny red carpet access to anyone who does not comply with these requirements. Although Clooney’s gown featured a train — a specific violation — she was allowed to attend the screening without incident.

A-Listers React to the New Restrictions

Clooney isn’t the only celebrity brushing against the new style standards. Earlier this week, actress Halle Berry revealed she had to alter her original outfit for Cannes after her initial gown, also with a train, was deemed non-compliant. She instead opted for a custom Jacquemus ensemble that still dazzled, despite the behind-the-scenes changes.

Fashion insiders say the new rules are creating logistical challenges for celebrity stylists and designers. Speaking to Vogue, a Hollywood stylist said, “We’ve been preparing dresses for Cannes for months. Suddenly being told that trains and flamboyance are no longer allowed puts us in a very tight spot — especially when Cannes is known for dramatic fashion.”

This is a notable shift for the festival, long considered one of the most glamorous events on the international film calendar. Over the years, Cannes has been a platform for high fashion, where stars often embrace bold or avant-garde styles. The 2025 shift reflects a desire for more traditional elegance and a more controlled event atmosphere.

A Star-Studded Premiere for Bono: Stories of Surrender

The film Clooney attended — Bono: Stories of Surrender — made its much-anticipated debut at Cannes on the same night. Directed by Andrew Dominik and produced by Brad Pitt through Plan B Entertainment, the documentary centers on U2 frontman Bono and his one-man stage show of the same name. It is inspired by his best-selling 2022 memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.

The Apple TV+ documentary combines storytelling, music, and theatrical visuals to explore Bono’s personal life, creative struggles, activism, and spiritual journey. According to the official synopsis and recent press releases, the film is described as “a bold and lyrical visual exploration” that brings his live performances to the screen with new cinematic depth.

The film features stripped-down versions of some of U2’s most famous songs, paired with harp and cello, making it both an artistic and intimate experience. The premiere included appearances by Bono himself, along with U2 bandmate The Edge, who joined Amal Clooney on the red carpet. The trio posed for photos, highlighting Clooney’s close ties to the production despite not being directly involved.

Among other celebrities in attendance were:

  • Actress Imogen Poots

  • Model Petra Nemcova

  • Musician Kim Gordon

  • Actress Thora Birch

George Clooney Misses the Event, Busy on Broadway

While Amal lit up the Cannes red carpet, her husband George Clooney, 64, was in New York City, where he is currently starring in the Broadway adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck. The stage play is based on his 2005 film of the same name, which he directed and starred in. The Broadway production marks a significant return to theater for Clooney and has been met with critical interest.

Although George had no involvement in Stories of Surrender, he maintains a close friendship with Brad Pitt, the film’s producer, and Bono, the film’s subject. The Clooneys have long supported U2’s activism and humanitarian efforts, with Bono even attending events for the Clooney Foundation for Justice in the past.

Bono: Stories of Surrender Heads to Apple TV+

Following its successful Cannes premiere, Bono: Stories of Surrender is scheduled for a global release on Apple TV+ on May 30, 2025. In a technological first for the platform, the film will also be available in Apple Immersive Video format for Apple Vision Pro users. This feature allows viewers to experience the performance with panoramic visuals and spatial audio, enhancing the emotional impact.

The documentary is expected to draw global attention not only for Bono’s story but also for its unique format and production value, offering a fresh take on music-based documentaries.

Style Meets Rulebook at Cannes

Amal Clooney’s appearance at the 78th Cannes Film Festival captured more than fashion headlines — it reignited conversations about how institutions like Cannes navigate evolving norms around self-expression and decorum. While the festival’s stricter dress code aims to create a more polished environment, it may be clashing with the creative spirit of many of its most iconic guests.

As more screenings and premieres unfold, the fashion world will be watching closely to see how other celebrities respond to the new rules — and whether more quiet acts of defiance, like Clooney’s elegant statement, will continue to shape the red carpet narrative.
