After a guy tried to cut it during excavation work, a World War II bomb exploded early Friday in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava, killing him and injuring another.
On Twitter, police claimed the dead guy most likely mistook the explosives for an old sewage pipe.
“He hacked up the metal with an angle grinder, and the explosive went off,” they continued.
“We can confirm it was an airborne bomb explosion,” Eva Michalikova, a police spokesperson, told AFP.
A 49-year-old guy died, while a 31-year-old male suffered a light head injury, according to local media.
About 50 individuals were evacuated from homes within 300 meters (yards) of the scene by police.
Ammunition and bombs from World War II are frequently discovered in the northeastern Czech Republic, where the Red Army pushed in the spring of 1945.
Hundreds of people were evacuated three times last year due to unexploded aerial bombs.
