Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival: Unveiling Chinese Culture

dragon boat festival celebration

Each year, the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Jie in Chinese, is celebrated with various festivities nationwide, with dragon boat races being the most famous.

Over time, each region has incorporated its own unique features and cultural traditions into these races. Anju Ancient Town in the Tongliang District of Chongqing Municipality is a place with a centuries-old history of celebrating this tradition.

A Spectacular Kickoff

The celebration kicked off on Saturday with a performance of the traditional dragon dance. A nearly 100-meter-long Tongliang handcrafted dragon glided across the water where two rivers meet.

Adding a modern twist to the festivities, stunts featuring jet skis, water jetpacks, and powered paragliders were also on display. Drones made four lifelike dragons fly gracefully in the sky, creating a spectacular visual feast.

Yan Yong, Director of the Tongliang Culture and Tourism Commission, emphasized the unique aspects of their celebration: “When it comes to the usual Dragon Boat Festival celebrations, many places stick to the traditional dragon boat races.

However, what we’re doing is showcasing intangible cultural heritage and presenting some unique performance styles.

This year, being the Year of the Dragon and Tongliang’s fame for its dragon culture, we’ve incorporated dragon-themed elements, making the celebration even more prosperous.”

Traditional Dragon Boat Races

The traditional dragon boat races are essential to the celebrations. With the sound of the starting whistle, rowers paddle vigorously, their boats racing toward the finish line as crowds cheer on. The races have inspired another competition, known as the duck-catching contest.

Firecrackers set off a race to catch ducks thrown into the water as the leading dragon boat approaches. It’s a highlight of the festivities.

He Wenrong, a local tourist, expressed his excitement: “This is my first time witnessing such a grand and awe-inspiring performance, and I’m truly amazed by the strong festive atmosphere of the Dragon Boat Festival. It’s our traditional holiday, and we should definitely continue to preserve and promote it.”

Eddy, an Australian tourist, shared his admiration: “China has a lot of culture and traditions. Many things here impressed me, not only the dragon boat race but also the environment, the view, and everything. Especially Chinese culture—I like the old culture, the old buildings, and things like that. Luckily, they keep it here like that.”

Anju Ancient Town: A Cultural Hub

Anju Ancient Town hosts the most traditional Dragon Boat Festival celebrations, making it one of the most attractive holiday destinations.

Visitors have the chance to immerse themselves in the charm of traditional culture in the homeland of the dragon.

The town’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage makes it a must-visit during the festival.

International Participation

On June 6th, international students from Chongqing University joined in the festivities of the Dragon Boat Festival held in Dasheng Town, Yubei District, Chongqing.

The students enthusiastically participated in making zongzi, traditional glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, and also took part in dragon boat races, immersing themselves fully in the vibrant celebrations.

This cultural exchange offered them a unique insight into the unique charm of Chinese heritage.

The Dragon Boat Festival in Chongqing not only showcases the rich traditions and cultural heritage of China but also serves as a platform for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

The vibrant celebrations, blending ancient customs with modern twists, ensure that this beloved festival continues to thrive and captivate people from all walks of life.
