Popular video streaming platform YouTube has revealed its plans to start experimenting with new artificial intelligence (AI) powered features. These innovative tools aim to provide an even more engaging and customized viewing experience for users. The features will be rolled out slowly over the coming weeks and months to gather feedback.
Conversational AI for Personalized Recommendations and Answering Questions
The first feature is a smart conversational assistant that can interact with viewers as they watch videos. Powered by large language models analyzing YouTube’s vast content library, it can understand natural language questions from users. Viewers can ask for recommendations of other videos to watch related to what they are currently viewing. The AI can suggest relevant content taking the user’s interests into account.
This creates a more interactive and personalized viewing session. Queries can be made without interrupting the video playback. The AI assistant provides a novel way for users to explore topics in greater depth and discover new content tailored to their tastes. Initial availability is for YouTube Premium subscribers in the US through the YouTube Android app. Additionally, you can also read about- Apple CEO Highlights Existing AI Features, Confirms Work on Generative AI
Summarizing Comment Topics Using AI
YouTube will also begin testing the use of AI to analyze and summarize the key topics being discussed in a video’s comments section. This gives viewers a quick overview of the sentiment and range of opinions shared instead of having to parse through all comments manually. Video creators can leverage the summaries to better understand their audience’s feedback and interests.
The AI identifies main themes and clusters comments into summarized topics. Creators can also delete any unwanted topic clusters. For now this is limited to English comments on a small subset of videos.
Continued Experimentation to Refine AI Features
YouTube reiterates these features are still experimental and early in development. The company will use insights from initial testing to improve the AI and functionality over time. The goal is to eventually expand availability and roll out more broadly if the new tools successfully enhance the YouTube platform’s user experience.
