The day was created to raise awareness about the significance of press freedom and to shed light on the difficulties journalists face in performing their duties around the globe.

In 1991, a group of African journalists convened in Namibia for a UNESCO seminar on promoting an independent and pluralistic press and proposed the creation of World Press Freedom Day. They proposed designating May 3 as an international day to honor and defend press freedom.

Later, the UNESCO General Conference approved the proposal, and in 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated May 3 as World Press Freedom Day. Since then, the day has been celebrated annually to bring attention to the significance of press freedom and the need to safeguard the media’s independence.
