We admit it, when Top Gun: Maverick was announced, we didn’t have high expectations. Although Top Gun was an ’80s classic, it never really received critical acclaim, and was more of a story of teenage rebellion than a war adventure. Sure, the planes made it look impressive (even Luis Miguel wanted to have something similar), but we didn’t expect a sequel to be so impressive or so amazing that it would make us forget the past completely, leaving us wanting to see more. It could be one of the best sequels in history, and it will undoubtedly be one of the most successful films of the year.
Top Gun: Maverick follows Tom Cruise reinterpreting his character Maverick, one of the best pilots in the world, who still fully maintains his rebellious spirit and who, in fact, has avoided any type of promotion to keep flying planes. One day the man is called in to train a group of Top Gun for a special mission under Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (who was played by Val Kilmer in the first film). Among his new students is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, who is the son of “Goose”, Rooster’s friend. Maverick who dies on the first movie.
Top Gun: Maverick does not depend on the past
While many sequels build on the first part, Top Gun: Maverick works as a stand-alone movie and you actually don’t have to have seen Top Gun to understand it. The story doesn’t take too much from the past to work. All of Maverick ‘s backstory is explained during the first part, however the rest is a new story entirely. Sure, fans will be in for a few surprises in references to the past, however, the rest will take us into this point in Maverick ‘s life with a new love interest and his own conflict to overcome.
This isn’t to say that it doesn’t live up to the original – in fact there are some very emotional moments reminiscing about the past, but it comes off with enough to appeal to anyone.
Visually masterful
Due to factors of the time, the original Top Gun currently does not look as impressive, but thanks to current technologies this sequel really manages to reach masterful levels with action scenes in the planes that really get you into the tension of what happens. Likewise, the photography of Oscar winner Claudio Miranda makes sure that each shot really takes on an important weight, creating not only a massive Hollywood success, but a beautiful one. The recommendation here is to watch it on the biggest screen you can.
Excellent cast
We know that Tom Cruise can load a movie on his own and his charm is at level 100, however, this time he is accompanied by great actors like Ed Harris , who plays his superior, Jon Hamm , an Admiral in charge of his mission, as well as young actors Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Danny Ramirez and Monica Barbaro. Also, Jennifer Connelly plays her new love interest who is also the daughter of a former admiral, complementing Cruise ‘s charm .
Top Gun: Maverick — A different story
What makes Top Gun: Maverick interesting is that it takes the concept of its first film, and stays close to that idea (despite being very different), and yet it doesn’t look like anything else in theaters right now. . It’s not a conventional war movie, it’s not Fast and Furious, it’s not a Marvel movie, it’s really a work about aviation – which you definitely don’t see very often – and it takes care to be the best of its kind while maintaining a style unique, an absolute approach to action.
