Meta is rolling out a new feature called Message Summaries in WhatsApp, aiming to help users quickly catch up on unread messages using artificial intelligence (AI). This feature, announced at Meta’s recent LlamaCon conference, is being introduced first in the United States for English-speaking users, with a broader global rollout planned for later in 2025.

What Is the Message Summaries Feature?

Message Summaries allow users to get a quick, bullet-point summary of unread messages in a chat. When you return to a conversation, you’ll see a prompt labeled “Summarize privately” hovering over your unread messages. Tapping this banner activates Meta’s AI, which processes the unread messages and displays a concise summary — saving users from scrolling through lengthy or busy chat histories.

This tool is especially useful for users who participate in large group chats or who are frequently away from their phones and return to an overwhelming number of unread messages. Instead of manually scrolling, they can now get the key points instantly.

Privacy by Design: What Makes It Safe?

One of the most significant concerns about any AI-driven feature in messaging apps is user privacy. WhatsApp, known for its end-to-end encryption, claims that this new feature does not compromise its commitment to keeping messages secure and private. To support this, Meta developed a technology called Private Processing.

Here’s how Private Processing works:

  • No Message Exposure to Meta Servers: The summaries are generated by Meta AI, but WhatsApp messages are not shared in raw form with Meta. Instead, processing occurs inside a secure environment that is isolated from Meta’s own data systems.
  • Trusted Execution Environments (TEE): Meta uses a secure, encrypted computation model, where the AI model processes the data inside a tamper-resistant container. Neither Meta engineers nor external systems can access the content during processing.
  • End-to-End Encryption Maintained: Even while processing messages for summary generation, encryption remains intact. No decrypted message data is stored or transmitted after processing.
  • Automatic Data Deletion: Once a summary is generated, all temporary data is erased. There is no long-term retention of message content, ensuring that users’ conversations remain secure.
  • Transparency Through Whitepapers: Meta has released detailed documentation and whitepapers explaining how the Private Processing system operates. It’s designed similarly to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, used to power advanced features like device-based Siri without compromising privacy.
  • Advanced Chat Privacy Controls: Users can manually exclude certain chats from being used by Meta AI for summarization. These preferences can be managed in the WhatsApp privacy settings.

How to Use the Feature

The Message Summaries feature will be optional and opt-in only. Here’s how users can engage with it:

  1. When you open WhatsApp and return to an unread chat, you may see a banner labeled “Summarize privately.”
  2. Tapping this will trigger Meta’s AI to analyze the unread messages and provide a clean summary with the most important takeaways.
  3. The summary appears only on your device and is not shared with other chat participants.
  4. If you don’t want summaries, simply ignore the banner. Nothing is activated automatically.

Users who prefer not to use AI features can rest assured that the function is completely disabled by default. You won’t get any summaries unless you manually request them.

Why This Matters

As more users rely on messaging apps like WhatsApp for both personal and professional communication, the volume of messages can be overwhelming. The Message Summaries feature aims to reduce friction by offering a quicker way to process large amounts of chat content — particularly in busy group conversations, work teams, or family threads.

The feature could also be beneficial for users with accessibility needs, limited time, or cognitive overload from managing numerous conversations. It turns WhatsApp into a more AI-smart assistant, not just a messaging platform.

However, AI isn’t perfect. Similar efforts by other companies — such as Apple’s notification summaries in iOS — have faced criticism for occasional inaccuracies or summarizing irrelevant parts. Meta’s implementation will likely evolve based on user feedback and real-world testing.

Rollout Timeline and Future Plans

Meta has begun rolling out the Message Summaries feature in the U.S. for English-language users as of June 2025. The company has stated its intention to expand the feature to more countries and languages by the end of the year.

There are also hints that more AI-powered WhatsApp features could be on the way, built using the same privacy-first Private Processing method. This includes potential features like:

  • AI-based message drafting
  • Event reminders
  • Contextual suggestions
  • Summary history archives for business chats

If successful, this feature could mark a significant step in integrating private AI tools into daily communication workflows — something few apps have managed at scale while preserving encryption and user trust.

Meta’s new Message Summaries feature in WhatsApp is a significant advancement in combining AI convenience with secure communication. It offers a helpful tool for users with message overload, while maintaining the core promise of WhatsApp: private, end-to-end encrypted messaging.
