According to the news agency AFP, Russia stated on Saturday that it had barred British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and many other top UK officials from entering the country due to sanctions imposed by London for the country’s military involvement in Ukraine.
It comes after the United Kingdom slapped economic sanctions on Russia on February 24 in reaction to the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The UK froze the assets of top Russian officials and friends of Russian President Vladimir Putin in order to punish them.
According to a statement from Russia’s foreign ministry, the decision was made “in view of the extraordinary hostile action by the British Government, including the implementation of sanctions against senior Russian officials,” and the list will be increased soon.
“Britain’s leadership is actively worsening the situation in Ukraine by equipping the Kyiv administration and coordinating similar efforts on NATO’s behalf,” the ministry claimed.
Meanwhile, The Times reported that British special forces are training Ukrainian troops to counter Russian attacks in Kyiv.
They are instructing Ukrainian forces on how to use anti-tank missiles known as Next Generation Light Anti-tank Weapons supplied by the United Kingdom (NLAWs).
They have been receiving military training for the previous two weeks, according to Captain Yuriy Myronenko. His battalion is stationed in Obolon, on the outskirts of Kyiv.
According to Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, placing sanctions on Russia is insufficient.
“In general,” he continued, “the democratic world must realize that Russia’s money for energy resources is actually money for the demise of democracy.”
“The sooner the democratic world recognizes that an energy embargo against Russia and a comprehensive blockade of its banking sector are crucial steps toward peace,” he added, “the sooner the war will end.”
