Real Madrid Survive Early Setback to Beat Sociedad and Stay Top
On Sunday, Real Madrid staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Real Sociedad 2-1, reclaiming the coveted top spot in LaLiga. With this victory, Carlo Ancelotti’s squad extended their winning streak to five consecutive games and reached a flawless 15 points in the league standings.
They now sit comfortably two points ahead of second-placed Barcelona, who put on a dominant display by thrashing Betis 5-0 on Saturday.
Real Sociedad quickly seized the lead just five minutes into the game, courtesy of former Real Madrid player Take Kubo. Kubo delivered a pinpoint pass to Ander Barrenetxea in the heart of the box, who managed to score on his second attempt. Despite an outstanding save by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, he couldn’t deny the rebounded shot from finding the back of the net.
The start of the second half saw Federico Valverde step up for Real Madrid, delivering an emphatic equalizer. He unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box that rattled the left post before nestling into the goal, marking his first goal of the season.
Speaking about the game, Valverde said, “The best thing we did was keep pushing. They had numerous chances, and they capitalized on their first opportunity to score. But we never stopped trying, and the early second-half goal provided us with the momentum we needed to press forward. I’m happy to contribute in any way I can.”
In the 60th minute, Joselu played a pivotal role in securing the lead for the home side. He soared above the defense to execute a commanding header, connecting perfectly with a cross from Fran Garcia on the left flank.
Joselu, a summer acquisition for the team, acknowledged the competitive nature of LaLiga, emphasizing that any squad in the league possesses the potential to pose a threat. He pointed out the need for improvement, particularly in terms of conceding early goals.
He added, “However, it’s worth noting that we were playing at the Bernabeu, and the support of our fans played a significant role in our comeback.”
Joselu also highlighted his personal contribution to the team’s success, expressing his satisfaction in scoring goals that contribute to earning valuable points. He stated, “Scoring goals and helping the team secure points is what brings me the greatest joy.”
Looking ahead, Real Madrid is set to kick off their Champions League campaign with a home match against Union Berlin on Wednesday, followed by a highly anticipated league derby clash with Atletico Madrid.
