The Link between Untidiness and Depression

Link between Untidiness and Depression

Our health is directly related to our environment, and most people understand that, but they may not understand the powerful link that these two things share. If someone is depressed, the solution may not be to simply fix their situation or to give them a word of encouragement. These things can help, but many underlying problems will likely still exist.

What researchers have found over decades of study is that depression and untidiness share a common link. If someone lives in an untidy home and they do not clean often, that is sometimes a sign of depression. We know that depressed people will be less likely to take care of themselves and their home, but yet most people probably won’t make that connection when they see a dirty home unless they realize someone is depressed.

Messiness Is Not Always a Sign of Depression

We need to get this disclaimer out early in the article- just because someone has a messy room or messy home, that does not mean they are depressed. Some of the happiest people are complete slobs, so we don’t always see a link between the two factors.

That being said, if someone normally keeps a clean room and then starts to leave it messy, that could indicate that they are depressed. Depression tends to lead to a change in habits, especially in areas of daily upkeep. People will tend to do only the essentials when they are depressed- just enough to get by. Cleaning their space may not fall into that category for them, and this can indicate to their friends that there may be a problem.

Depressed People May Need Help

Depressed People May Need Help

It can be harmful to a depressed person for their friends or family to tell them to clean up their act, stop acting depressed, and make their space look tidy. These kinds of advice are not usually helpful and could actually cause more harm. They point out the seriousness of the problem rather than provide a solution.

What can help is if someone who cares about them pitches in to help. If you want to assist a depressed person in improving their mood or their situation, then you can offer to hire professionals who do deep cleaning in Nashville. Or you can offer to help them clean up their space. This can make a big difference for them, because it shows that you care, and it helps them to have a cleaner and tidier space. When they are back to living in a clean environment, that can lower their cortisol levels, decrease stress, and help with the depression.

Spending time with them cleaning can be helpful since it gives them company. Many times, some social interaction is all someone needs to start to get out of a depressive funk. Just to know that someone values them and wants to spend time with them is a key way to help them realize their value. It may help them to realize that their situation is not as bad as they think it is.

Depression and Focus

When someone is depressed, they will often have trouble concentrating. It may be very difficult for them to get tasks done because they lack energy or motivation. They may not be able to focus on a single task for very long, which makes it unlikely that they will clean up their home.

Having a messy space makes the problem worse, actually. When you are in a disorganized mess, surrounded by clutter, then you are going to have trouble focusing. Your brain will not work like it should, and that can mean poor concentration abilities and an inability to finish an extended task.

The way to help in this situation is to offer to clean for the person or with them. If it is your child that is depressed and you want them to clean their room, though, then you may want to break the work down into smaller tasks. This gives them less overwhelming jobs to focus on, and it helps to divide the work into manageable chunks. If you give them enough time and space to do the cleaning at their own pace, they may get it done on their own, and that can help with their focus and depression as a result.

Tidiness Is a Safeguard Against Depression

People who keep a tidy home are less likely to be depressed. That may sound like it would not make sense, but there are many reasons why people keep a neat environment. They may be focused and disciplined, which means they are less likely to be powerfully affected by the things that would cause other less disciplined people to feel depressed.

Tidiness helps to fight depression because it keeps people focused and less distracted. Also, if your home is tidy, then your stress levels will be lower, as will your cortisol levels. This means that you are at lower risk for developing depression.

There are many factors that contribute to depression, and these factors can make the depression worse or keep a person in a depressive state for longer. If you keep a tidy home, you will be fighting back against some of those factors, helping to calm your mind and give your mind less to worry about.

A person who had a bad day, the kind of day that could lead to depression, can come home to a tidy home and be filled with peace and joy about how comforting the home looks to them. They won’t feel like they need to do a bunch of cleaning or feel overwhelmed by housework, and they are going to be less likely to become depressed.

There is far more than just keeping a tidy home that you will need to do to avoid depression, but it helps. Anything that contributes to a positive mental state is good for fighting depression and for keeping people from feeling depressed. If you can keep your home tidy and clean, then that will go a long way toward safeguarding your mental health.
