Another Holi mythology involves the demon king Hiranyakashipu, his son Prahalad, a Lord Vishnu devotee, and his demonic aunt Holika. Hiranyakashipu was blessed with the ability to never be slain by a man or an animal, according to Hindu legend. He desired that others worship him. When his son became a Lord Vishnu devotee and refused to worship Hiranyakashipu, he persuaded his sister Holika to kill him by sitting on a pyre. Holika sat on the fire with Prahlad on her lap, wearing her flame-shielding shawl. Prahlad, on the other hand, began praying to Vishnu, who sent a gust of wind that threw Holika’s shawl from her shoulders and onto Prahlad, saving him while allowing her to burn to death. This is why Holika Dahan is observed the day before Holi.
The demon king was then murdered by Lord Vishnu’s avatar, Narasimha, who was half human and half lion. As a result, Holi is renowned as the day when good triumphs over evil.
Holi Celebration
Holika Dahan is the start of Holi celebrations, when people ignite a bonfire to symbolize the victory of good over evil. People get up early the next day to play with colors, a tradition known as Gulal. They get together with their friends and family and spread colors on each other’s faces. Children play with their mates by filling balloons and toy guns with water. With their loved ones, they also enjoy sweet delights and thandai particularly prepared for the celebration.
The festival of Holi is observed in a similar manner across the country. However, several states celebrate the occasion in a unique fashion. For example, in the Braj regions of Mathura, Vrindavan, Gowardhan, Gokul, Nandagaon, and Barsana, women beat males with laths or sticks while attempting to cover themselves. In Vrindavan, Phoolwali Holi is also celebrated with a lot of fanfare. At Banke Bihari Temple, devotees and priests throw flowers at each other.
