From kings and scientists to inventors and entertainers, this day has many stories to tell.

Historical Events of November 17

1491: Royal Engagement

On November 17, 1491, Anne of Brittany agreed to marry King Charles VIII of France. This marriage was very important for both France and Brittany.

Anne was the ruler of Brittany, which was then separate from France. By marrying her, Charles VIII helped make Brittany part of France.

This marriage changed the map of France forever. It was one of the last steps in making France the country we know today.

1558: Elizabeth I’s Ascension

Elizabeth I's Ascension

On November 17, 1558, Elizabeth I became Queen of England after her half-sister Mary I died. Elizabeth was 25 years old when she became queen.

Mary I was called “Bloody Mary” because she had many Protestants killed for their religion. Elizabeth was different – she tried to make peace between Catholics and Protestants.

Elizabeth’s rule started what many people call England’s “Golden Age.” She was one of England’s most famous and successful monarchs.

1855: Victoria Falls Discovery

On November 17, 1855, David Livingstone became the first European to see Victoria Falls. These huge waterfalls are on the Zambezi River between what is now Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Livingstone was a missionary and explorer who traveled through much of Africa. He named the falls after Queen Victoria of England.

The local people had known about these falls for a long time and called them “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” which means “The Smoke that Thunders.”

1917: Lenin’s Press Control

On November 17, 1917, Vladimir Lenin said it was okay to stop freedom of the press for a while. This happened just after the Russian Revolution.

Lenin said this was needed to protect the new government, but it wasn’t supposed to last long. However, the Soviet Union kept controlling the press for many years.

This showed how the new Communist government would run Russia. It was the start of many years of strict control over what people could say and write.

1970: Computer Mouse Patent

On November 17, 1970, Douglas Engelbart got a patent for the first computer mouse. A patent is an official document that shows someone invented something.

Engelbart’s mouse was made of wood and had two wheels. It was very different from the computer mice we use today, but it worked the same way.

This invention changed how people use computers. Before the mouse, people could only use keyboards to control computers.
