Google Messages Sheds “By Google” Label in Branding Update

Google Messages rebranding

The popular Android messaging application, which has until now been referred to in official Google materials and partner promotions as “Messages by Google,” has stripped the “by Google” extension from its name. This change reflects a branding update that better aligns with how everyday users refer to the app in conversation.

An Application That Users Have Long Simply Called “Google Messages”

While corporate announcements and carrier partnerships have utilized the fuller branding, for years regular Android owners have referred to the messaging service by the simpler moniker of “Google Messages.” This renaming now catches up to the organic naming habits of general consumers and brings official materials in line with real-world terminology.

Upcoming Design Personalization Speaks to Broader Customization Trends

As part of a wider pattern of allowing more user customization in order to boost engagement, Google Messages will soon roll out chat features that let individuals express more of their personalities. One such option coming soon is custom chat bubble themes, with 8 different colors allowing friends to color-coordinate their conversations according to preference. The Streamlining of the Brand Name Coincides with Continued Feature Expansions

Interestingly, Google has elected to trim the excessive branding from its messaging application just as the app continues to expand its capabilities in order to attract more users. The newly redubbed Google Messages is introducing seven major feature upgrades to celebrate hitting one billion downloads. So while the name loses extraneous details, the tool gains more ways to creatively enrich chats.

As Functionality Multiplication Persists, Labeling Recalibrates to User Standards

In summary, as Google Messages gains more functionality, its labeling is being reworked to better fit user naming standards. The official brand shift to Google Messages reflects organic terminology while showcasing how the app offers creative personalization for over one billion people and counting.
