Apple Releases iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 with New Features and Improvements
On September 18th, iOS 17 will be ready for public download, introducing iPhone users to new features such as Live Voicemail, StandBy mode, and a new Journal app. Apple made the announcement on Tuesday during its iPhone 15 launch event, after originally revealing the operating system on June 5th at WWDC.
On September 18th, the full-release version of iPadOS 17 will also be available, offering new methods for iPad owners to engage with widgets and personalize their lock screen. iPadOS 17 works with sixth-generation iPad models, fifth-generation iPad minis, third-generation iPad Airs, and second-generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch models and later. The Apple website has a complete list of compatible models.
Following the full release of iOS 17, users will be able to create customisable stickers, set up Contact Posters, and benefit from other autocorrect and speech transcription improvements. You may also activate Siri without saying “hey,” and if you don’t answer your phone, the new Live Voicemail function will display a live transcript on your screen as a voicemail is being recorded. We especially appreciate the new StandBy mode, which turns your iPhone into a bedside clock when turned on its side.
By bringing two iPhone devices together, NameDrop allows iOS 17 users to effortlessly share contact information using AirDrop. In the fine print of its news release, Apple warns that some of these iOS 17 features may not be accessible in all countries or regions, so you’ll need to visit Apple’s website if you have your heart set on something specific.
Some people have previously had access to the updated iPhone OS, so we knew what to anticipate — members of Apple’s developer program, for example, were able to download it almost immediately after the WWDC keynote, and the initial public beta was released on July 12th. iOS 17 is only compatible with iPhone models equipped with the A12 Bionic chip or newer, which means the iPhone XR / XS will be the oldest models to receive the upgrade.
Apple’s website lists which iPhone models are compatible, as well as a complete list of all the repairs, improvements, and updates for iOS 17.
