Cricket World Cup 2023: Analyzing the Paths to the Final Four

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Semifinals

The Indian cricket team is on the verge of securing a semifinal spot at the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. With 6 wins out of 6 matches so far, the hosts only need one more victory in their remaining three games to cement their position in the final four.

Even if India loses all three matches, their healthy net run rate means they could still qualify depending on other results. Virat Kohli and co. will be aiming to seal their berth as soon as possible, starting with their next match against Sri Lanka on November 2.

South Africa Well-Placed Despite Shock Loss

Despite being upset by the Netherlands earlier in the tournament, South Africa find themselves second on the table courtesy of five wins in eight matches. They possess the best net run rate of all teams, which could prove crucial in tiebreaker scenarios.

The Proteas do tend to stumble in World Cup knockout games, but their strong batting lineup led by Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram will be hoping to shake off that tag this time. Two more wins from their last three fixtures should be enough for a semifinal ticket.

New Zealand Seeking Momentum with Must-Win Games

After thrashing hosts England in their first match, the Kiwis have suffered back-to-back losses to put their campaign in jeopardy. Kane Williamson’s team probably need to win their remaining three matches against top sides South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to make the semis.

Even two victories could potentially be sufficient depending on other results, given New Zealand’s solid net run rate. But the Black Caps will want to hit top gear heading into the business end of the tournament.

Defending Champs England Facing Early Exit

In contrast to New Zealand, England find themselves rock bottom of the table after managing just one win in seven matches so far. Having been thumped by India and South Africa, their title defense is in tatters.

Skipper Jos Buttler admitted before the World Cup that England were not focused on defending the trophy. And that prophecy seems likely to come true, with the reigning champions requiring a minor miracle to reach the semis now. Veterans Guiding Australia’s Resurgence

Written off after two early losses, five-time champions Australia have lived up to their never-say-die attitude by bouncing back with four consecutive wins. Veteran batters like Steve Smith and David Warner have led the Aussie resurgence.

For Aaron Finch’s men to make the semifinals, they probably need to win their remaining three games against England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Two victories could also potentially suffice depending on net run rates.

Afghanistan Riding High After Upsets

Spearheaded by star spinner Rashid Khan, Afghanistan have been the surprise package of the tournament so far. They’ve beaten former champions Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka to throw the group wide open.

While qualifying for the semis would still require other results to go their way, Afghanistan have proven they can compete with and defeat the top teams. Their upcoming matches against the Netherlands, Australia and South Africa will test their resolve.

Can Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Spring a Surprise?

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh appear long shots for the semifinals but could still make a late push if they manage a clean sweep of their remaining games. Both teams have struggled with injuries but possess quality spinners who could be effective on the worn Indian pitches.

The likes of Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka) and Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh) will play a big role if their sides are to stand any chance of sneaking into the final four from here. If you want you can also read- 5 key players to miss the 2023 World Cup

Pakistan, Netherlands Need Minor Miracle

Despite boasting talent like Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan are down in 9th position after a string of poor performances. To qualify now, the 2009 champions will likely need to win their last three matches and hope other results go their way significantly.

The Netherlands can also mathematically make the semis after their giant-killing acts earlier in the tournament. But realistically, the Dutch too require multiple massive victories and a lot of luck from here on.
