After a vial was found tainted by foreign material, Moderna Inc announced on Friday that it was recalling 764,900 doses of its COVID-19 vaccine made by its contract manufacturer Rovi.
Moderna stated that no safety concerns had been detected with the batches supplied in January in Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.
The contamination was discovered in just one vial, according to the drugmaker, who is recalling the entire batch out of “an excess of caution.” It didn’t say what was discovered in the vial.
After an examination detected stainless steel impurities in some vials, Japanese authorities suspended the use of some doses of the vaccine, which Moderna later recalled.
To date, the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine has been provided in over 900 million doses over the world.
