First Indian Tourist Blasts Off to Space on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Flight

First Indian Tourist Space Jeff Bezos Blue Origin Flight

Jeff Bezos-backed Blue Origin resumed its space flights today after a two-year hiatus. A group of six adventurers completed an 11-minute journey to space after liftoff from Texas, marking the seventh crewed mission for Blue Origin, named Mission NS-25.

Gopi Thotakura: The First Indian Space Tourist

Among the six crew members was 30-year-old Gopi Thotakura, a pilot from Andhra Pradesh, India. Thotakura co-founded Preserve Life Corp, a medical institution near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport that focuses on holistic health methods. His participation in this mission made him the first Indian to travel into space as a tourist on a Blue Origin flight.

“It was amazing… You have to see it with your eyes,” said Gopi Thotakura after his space trip. “I can’t describe how it is to look into space… Everybody should go to space. It was good to see Earth from the other side.”

Blue Origin highlighted Thotakura’s aviation background on the social media platform X, stating, “Gopi Thotakura is a lifelong pilot and aviator who learned how to fly before he could drive. He flies jets commercially, in addition to piloting bush, aerobatic, and seaplanes. He’s also the co-founder of Preserve Life Corp, a global center for holistic wellness and applied health.”

The Crew of Mission NS-25

The other crew members included Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L. Hess, Carol Schallera, and Ed Dwight. Notably, Ed Dwight, at 90 years old, became the oldest person to travel into space, surpassing Star Trek star William Shatner, who was nearly two months younger when he made his space journey.

Ed Dwight holds a significant place in history as the first Black American man trained as an astronaut. Despite not achieving his goal of being the first Black astronaut in space in 1961, Dwight’s accomplishments and experiences have continued to inspire many.

A Historic Flight

“We just completed our seventh human spaceflight and the 25th flight for the New Shepard program. Our #NS25 astronaut crew included: Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Ed Dwight, Ken Hess, Carol Schaller, and Gopi Thotakura. Thank you, astronauts,” said Blue Origin on X after the space flight.

Reflecting on his journey, Dwight said before the liftoff, “I was the first guy in the world to be famous for not doing something. Needless to say, I’m overwhelmed.” He shared that his reassignment to a competitive Air Force program by President John F. Kennedy, which was seen as a path to the astronaut corps, ended without him being chosen as an astronaut.

“This is a life-changing experience, everybody needs to do this,” Dwight expressed after the 11-minute space flight. Reflecting on his past, he added, “I thought I didn’t really need this in my life, but I lied,” acknowledging the impact of his journey into space.

The successful completion of Mission NS-25 not only marks a significant milestone for Blue Origin but also for Gopi Thotakura and Ed Dwight, who have made history with their participation. This mission underscores the continuing advancements in space tourism and the increasing accessibility of space travel for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
