Travis Kelce Slams Scouts Over Shedeur Sanders’ Draft Fall

Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce is speaking out in defense of Shedeur Sanders, the Colorado quarterback who unexpectedly slipped to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL Draft. Kelce, a Super Bowl champion and one of the league’s most respected voices, called out the anonymous sources who questioned Sanders’ character and potentially influenced his fall down the draft board.

Shedeur Sanders’ Dramatic Draft Slide Raises Eyebrows

Heading into the 2024–2025 NCAA season, Shedeur Sanders — the son of NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders — was widely viewed as a top quarterback prospect. Many mock drafts projected him as a first-round pick, with some analysts even suggesting he could go in the top three.

But during the NFL Draft weekend, Sanders fell to the 144th overall pick in the fifth round, eventually selected by the Cleveland Browns. The significant drop became one of the biggest stories of the draft, sparking debates on sports talk shows and social media.

What caused the slide? While no team officially explained their reasoning, anonymous pre-draft reports criticized Sanders’ demeanor during interviews, suggesting he came off as entitled or difficult. Some scouts reportedly questioned his attitude, leadership style, and interactions with teams during the evaluation process.

Travis Kelce: “Put a Name On It”

On the latest episode of his hit podcast New Heights, which he co-hosts with brother and retired NFL center Jason Kelce, Travis didn’t hold back his frustration.

“I think whoever’s the f—ing anonymous person that’s f—ing saying this should f—ing come out and say who they were,” Travis said bluntly. “Like, what the f— is that about?”

He continued by calling out the cowardice of remaining anonymous while potentially damaging a young player’s reputation:

“If you’re going to f—ing leak that type of s—, be the one that says, ‘Yeah, it just didn’t go well for us.’ Don’t f—ing say we’re anonymous, ya know? That’s so f—ing lame. I just feel like there’s no validity to it.”

Travis defended Sanders not just as a player but also as a person, stating that he didn’t see anything concerning from watching game film or hearing about Sanders’ college career.

Talent Over Gossip, Says Travis Kelce

Kelce emphasized that when it comes to the NFL Draft, football performance should speak louder than personality rumors.

Kelce also praised the influence Sanders and his father have had on college football over the past few years. Since transferring to the University of Colorado with his father, Shedeur became one of the most talked-about players in college football. Despite the pressure and media attention, he delivered impressive performances, especially during the 2023 season, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Jason Kelce Weighs In: Teams Just Didn’t Believe in His Talent Enough

Jason Kelce, who recently retired after a Hall of Fame-caliber career with the Philadelphia Eagles, offered a slightly different but complementary perspective. He said that NFL teams overlook off-field concerns if they truly believe a player is elite.

“If these teams really felt that Shedeur Sanders was a top first-round talent, they would’ve picked him,” Jason said. “You mean to tell me if Michael Vick had these same exact off-field things happening, he wouldn’t have been taken in the first round? Of course, he would have.”

Jason’s point was that NFL teams routinely draft players with serious legal or behavioral red flags — sometimes even criminal charges — if they believe that player can win games.

“There are too many players with character issues, with concerns every year — criminal behavior, off-field antics, whatever — who get drafted in the first round. Why? Because they’re ballers,” he said. “If Shedeur really was that level of talent, somebody would have picked him higher.”

He concluded that while anonymous concerns may have played a role, the more likely explanation is that NFL evaluators simply didn’t believe Shedeur had first-round upside at the pro level.

A Fresh Start in Cleveland?

Despite the drop, Travis Kelce sees the Browns as a great opportunity for Sanders. As an Ohio native and lifelong Browns supporter, Travis expressed genuine excitement about Sanders landing in Cleveland.

“I love this for Cleveland. God, I love this for Cleveland,” Travis said on the podcast. “You get a swag champ that works his ass off and now has something to prove.”

He predicted that the chip on Sanders’ shoulder — formed after falling so far in the draft — would drive him to work harder and eventually earn a starting role.

“I can see him working his ass off and becoming the starting quarterback in Cleveland at some point, for sure.”

The Browns currently have several quarterbacks on their roster, including Deshaun Watson, Kenny Pickett, and rookie Dillon Gabriel. Given Watson’s ongoing injury issues, there could be opportunities for Sanders to climb the depth chart.

Jason: “Let the Kid Prove Everyone Wrong”

Jason Kelce wrapped up the discussion by rooting for Sanders’ redemption arc:

“I’m rooting for him. Talk about a great story,” Jason said. “I hope he makes it, and he brings all of the people he brought with him to the meetings to the contract that he signs after he f—ing leads them to some playoff game.”

He added that if Sanders succeeds, it will be a “big f— you to everybody” who doubted his character and professionalism.

Talent, Not Talk, Should Shape Careers

This controversy highlights a recurring issue in professional sports: the use of anonymous sources to undermine players’ reputations, often without accountability or evidence. The Kelce brothers’ comments bring attention to the importance of transparency, fairness, and merit-based evaluation — especially for young athletes entering the professional stage.

Sanders now has a chance to prove his critics wrong on the field — and if he does, this draft-day disappointment could become the start of a remarkable comeback story.
